How to tell your loved ones … they suck (#Blogmas day 7)

I went to the movies the other day and saw a French film called Margaret (that’s the English translation of the Greek French translation. Heheheh). It was about a woman who was bubbly and lovely, and thought she could sing for the opera, but she couldn’t. Her voice was terrible and no one would tell her. She then decided she wanted to sing in front of a big audience and the people around her let her, because they thought that would make her happy. I am not going to tell you what happened in the end you should watch the movie (this is based on a true story by the way). I didn’t like the movie, or actually not the movie per se, but the sentiment in the movie. To me, the message was, if you love someone who loves doing something (thinks they are talented at something), it’s not always the best idea to tell them that they are not good at it. Just let them do their thing even if that means that others might make fun of them. It’s like saying, ” Let your loved ones  do their thing”  but is that always the best way to go?Christmas pic 1

How supportive is being supportive?

Yes, you need to help our loved ones follow their creative dreams. Yes, you need to support them. Show admiration etc. etc, but what if a loved one is terrible at something and thinks they are fabulous? Do you lie just for the sake of being supportive?

Hmmmmm

Nope. You gotta be truthful.

Why should someone tell you you ain’t that great ( in a nice way?)

Well, our loved ones can be passionate about many things and because they are passionate, they cannot really see how bad they are at them. It’s like falling in love, only this time you are in love with what you are doing. ❤ ❤

Me, me, me

Take me for example, I love blogging, drawing, and singing. I am passionate about them. I even think I am good at them (toot toot aka totting my own horn). The other day though my friend told me that yes, my painting is nice, but I need to improve my proportions. Thank you!! That helps me. I will keep on doing what I love, putting myself out there, but I want you, the person who cares for me, to tell me when I am not doing something well and give me ideas on how to become better.

I don’t want my people to completely shatter my dreams and make me feel horrible (cause that is not being honest or constructive, it’s being mean), but if I am doing something that I love and I shouldn’t be going tooooooooooooooooo public with it. Tell me!!! Help me become better. I will still be driven and love the things I love, but I will be careful, I will try to find ways to improve. It is OK to burst my pink little bubble.  Living in LaLa Land is grand, but for how long? (For dramatic purposes I am using the word suck. Reader discretion is advised. Do not use the word ‘suck’ when talking to someone you love).

How to give your loved ones constructive feedback about their talents/ the things they love.

There is a thing we teachers call sandwich feedback.  That’s how we give feedback to our kids.

What you do is:

Say something nice.

Say what needs to be improved.

Say something nice again.

OR  say,

You do this….

You don’t do this….

Maybe you need to do this…..

sandwich feedback.jpg

Final thoughts

Giving a loved one constructive feedback doesn’t mean that they will stop what they are doing. That’s not why you give constructive feedback. It is just a way for you to help them to become better. Even if you hurt their ego a bit, in the long run they will thank you cause if they take your (genuine) advice only good things will come.

So, as Christmas is right around the corner and everyone is lovey-dovey, just give your loved one a helping hand and be truthful/ be constructive. Help them hone their talents.

#Blogmas day 6: meltdown-ing

Are Capricorns having a bad weekend or is it just me? Yesterday, I had a great day. I did a bit of shopping, pampering and going out. Whilst I was out though I started talking about age and what the meaning of life is. I am turning 40 in January and I started wondering about my life. Don’t get me wrong. I am content. Kinda happy.

Reasons to feel happy

I have accomplished a lot in terms of work, I have studied quite a bit, I make a good living. I am healthy (kinda), I have a great family and friends, who love me, so why do I still want more? Is it cause I am single? Will a man make me happy or will he add to the ” Oh man why did he do that?”. I am old and I do not compromise any more. What about my biological clock? When on earth will it start ticking? I feel no need to have a kid (and I know some people are going to start rolling their eyes- sowie guys but no tick tock here). I actually blame the latter on the fact that I am a teacher and I am around kids all day long. So over cocktails last night I had my first melt down ( for dramatic purposes only I am using the word meltdown).

Meltdown numero duo

So, today I woke up and felt like a happy planner. I started planning, used my stickers and then started feeling sorry for myself. Again. I am colourblind and while I was decorating my planner I had no idea whatsoever about the colours I was using. I always have to label stuff to know how to coordinate cause otherwise everything looks like a hot mess. So, I planned next week but then I started thinking about my day at the shops yesterday and how I was at the M.A.C counter looking at all the lipsticks without knowing what anything was. Afterwards I started thinking about how ALL cosmetic companies give their makeup random names and nothing has the name of the actual colour on it. Grrrrrrr I wanna be able to tell the difference between colours!!

My planner today

I have a headache cause of the drinks last night and well, I have been playing the song Same old love by Selena Gomez on repeat.

So, there you have it. Not having a good day today. Seriously gonna go check out my star sign now, have some lunch and feel a bit more sorry for myself. I will be fine tomorrow cause shit happens and then you get over it. I am feeling a bit better though. Thanks guys ❤

#Plan with me: December 7th-13th

So, today I am having one of those days where I am feeling sorry for myself. I made my first full box sheet (which you will be able to download later on in this post). My boxes are a bit shorter than I intended (2.4 inches height/1.5 width) and I thought, “doesn’t matter, I will use washi tape” and that’s what I did. My stubborn mind forced me to use my full boxes, which are a textured vintage pink and beige digital paper (it’s supposed to look like wrinkled paper), and since it’s Christmas, the same stubborn mind forced me to use a silver Christmas-themed washi tape. I was going to go for a spread that looked like a present (kinda).

All was good till I saw the result. A flop. I also started feeling sorry for myself cause I am also colourblind and cannot really tell if anything matched (it looks like it doesn’t. Welcome to my colourblind world!). Urghhhhhhhh. So, two disasters in one spread! 1. Short boxes. 2. Does anything match?!! Anyhow, I am going with it. Buck up Joanna!!  So, here is my spread.

Spread

#Blogmas Day 5: A lot of something(s)

Blogmas logo

So, today I am going to share with you a few something(s) I did, bought, read and so on today.

Something I did

I got my hair done. Dark blonde with lighter highlights. I am set for the holidays.

Something I bought

Yeap, pay day was a few days ago and I went to H& M (again). I got a sweater, some Christmas-y earrings, a ponpon for my bag and a pink shimmer dust ( I did not need this, but it looks great on my vanity).

20151205_192744.jpg

Something I read

Did you know that people are drawn to glitter because of our innate need to search for water (water/streams have a shine to them)? Did you know that Xmas is written  with an X because of the Greek word Χριστός  which means Christ and starts with an X? I have found a website called mental floss which I really enjoy reading. It is full of random and unnecessary info, but I ❤ reading it. Check it out here.

Something I know

Who won America’s next top model (well technically I don’t know yet, but by the time I hit publish I will know).

Ok gotta go now!!

See you tomorrow. Feel free to tell me what you did today. Remember to follow this blog or connect with me on Twitter or Instagram (@mypinkrambles).Thanks for storrping by ❤

See you tomorrow!!

#Blogmas Day 4:Looking at the year that has gone by

Blogmas logo

Today I spent most of my day teaching, so I haven’t had many opportunities for Christmas-y blog stuff, but I started making my December planner dashboard yesterday and I decided to make this #Blogmas day 4. So, back to my planner,  I thought it would be a good idea to dedicate the December dashboard to important things that happened in 2015 and what I want to remember. I also had lots of glitter which I wanted to you and where better than a dashboard? ❤

dashboard.jpg

After working on my dashboard I decided to make some paperclips and I did. How? I went to the 1 euro store yesterday and bought some stars for the Christmas tree, but instead of using them on my tree, I turned them into paper clips. I took out my glue, my paper clips and started sticking them together and voila, you can see the result here (I use glue called UHU and it is for sticking metal to anything).

stars.jpg

Everything used in this spread was bought at the 1 euro store , so i guess you can find the equivalent in a 1 dollar/pound store.

So, there you have it lovelies. Blogmas Day 4. Catch up on the other days by clicking on the #Blogmas2015 tab in the categories section. If you <3, you really need to check my planning category for loads of planner-related posts (freebies/interviews and plan with me posts). Please subscribe to this blog if you like what you read. #Blogmas Day 3: Which YouTubers’ #Vlogmas I will be watching

Blogmas logo

So, we talked about what #Blogmas is (writing a post a day throughout Decemeber), let’s talk about #Vlogmas. What’s Vlogmas? Well YouTubers doing daily vlogs. So,when you watch ‘vlogmas’ you get ideas on what to shop, what to eat or bake, you learn about makeup and everything else Christmas-y. For me, vlogs are a way to de compress after teaching 24/7! So, here is a list of some of my favourite YouTubers (their channels have been linked to their names)

Marnie aka Ms Goldgirl

I enjoy watching Marnie’s videos cause, well, she was a teacher (extra points here), she has kids who go to school, so I see what schools are like in the US, and finally she is my age!! Her vlogmas is called Vlogidays!

UK YouTubers

I really enjoy watching these girls’ Vlogmas cause they walk around  London, and I ❤ London. It’s great to ‘spend time’ with them and see shops, restaurants and so on. I actually put some of them in my planner, so I can check them out when I go to London.

Lily Pebbles

Tanya Burr

Amelia Liana

So, that’s all for today. See you tomorrow. Remember to subscribe to my blog and connect with me on IG or Twitter (@mypinkrambles). Check out #Blogmas day 1 and 2Tell me if you have any YouTubers you like, so I can check out their channels!

#Blogmas Day 2: 5 songs that remind me of the holidays

Blogmas logo

So today I am going to talk about songs and what they mean to me cause we can’t have holidays without a tune!  Before you get sick and tired of them, I thought I’d share a couple of my favourites and tell you the connections I have made with these songs, there is a Greek one here as well (I live in Greece). So, #Blogmas Day 2

My favourite Christmas children’s song

I just love anything related to Rudolph. Com’on, the dude has a shiny red nose. How cool is that? I remember spending hours watching Rudolph cartoons when I was a kid. I always play the Rudolph song now for my kids (students) as well!

All time classic (that reminds me of shopping for some odd reason)

I have no idea why, but this song always makes me want to put on a coat and some gloves and hit the shops! I have associated it with buying!! The essence of the song is the complete opposite. Go figure : s

 Last Christmas

I was a kid in Australia when this song came out. I have been brainwashed to like it. It is part of my childhood, adulthood, and old time classic. I also think those ugly jumpers are always in fashion.

And a Greek one : D

I am a Greek, in Greece , so had to share with you guys a Greek pop song. Enjoy < 3 cause this is definitely Greek to YOU 🙂  🙂

And one little extra….

What are your favourite songs? How are they connected to your holdiays? Leave a comment below!! Don’t forget to subscribe to my blog or follow me soemwhere in the social media world.

MareBear Crafts: Etsy store Owner Interview

Hi Lovelies!

Today I am featuring Etsy store:  MareBear Crafts. Mary (one of the owners) tells us a bit about herfelf and the things she likes. She also mentions her favourite winter kit. You may want to have a look at her store 🙂 and pick it up. So, let’s see what Mary has to say.

Hi Mary! Can you tell me a bit about yourself?
Well, my name is Mary and I absolutely love all things crafty. I love DIYs, scrapbooking, and anything that allows me to be creative. I’m a full-time nurse and a full-time crafter.

How and why did you start making stickers?
I started making stickers when I was still in college. I’ve always been a “planner geek.” I would spend the beginning of each semester writing in all the important dates for my classes. I tried to color code and find different methods to organize my schedule. I started to make personal stickers to use in my planner with Avery labels. They were functional, but not as cute as I would like them. I then started to make stickers using my crafting machines. I never had any intentions to sell my stickers. It was my fun creative outlet that also helped me stay organized.

When did you open your own shop?
My boyfriend was the one who opened my shop nearly a year ago. At the time I didn’t think anyone would buy my stickers. I thought I was one of very few adults to use stickers in their planners. Boy, was I wrong and I’m glad I was wrong!
Marebearcrafts
What can someone find at your Etsy store?
In our Etsy shop, individuals can find a variety of stickers. We have planning stickers that range from functional to decorative. We also have stickers in numerous sizes to fit a multitude of different planners in the market. Something that sets us aside from many other sticker shops is we allow customizations on the majority of the stickers we carry. Stickers can be customized in text, color, and size!

That’s great! Most stores focus on the ECLP! So, where can people find you? How can we connect with you?

You can find our store here.
We have an Instagram, @MareBearCrafts as well as a Facebook page and Facebook group.

My favorite winter set from our shop would be the Cozy winter kit. It has everything you need for one week’s spread!

#Blogmas Day 1: What I luv about the holidays

Blogmas logo

I said on Twitter that I was going to do #Blogmas but then I forgot about it, and then today, I woke up and thought, ” Oh c@#p! It’s the 1st of December!  I said I was going to do Blogmas!!” What’s Blogmas? It is something like a challenge where you write one post a day till Christmas OR the end of December. My aim is end of December, let’s see if I can make it!!! So, now back to my freak out, after realising that I wanted to do Blogmas, I rushed to my pc, turned it on, and here you have it; Blogmas day numero uno.

I thought I’d start off by telling you a bit about myself, and then move on to what I ❤ about Christmas, cause it’s my favourite holiday.

Me, me, me, me

I am Joanna. I grew up in Sydney but I now live in Greece. I am 39 and a Capricorn (which means I am turning 40 in a bit. Shhhhhh don’t tell anyone).  I am a teacher. I teach Business English online (Business English has to do with language/types of communication business people use) and in the afternoons, I teach Greek kids English. Every summer I go to the UK and teach English at various universities. So, far I have lived in Newcastle, Bristol and Sheffield. I ❤ summers in the UK (yeah, I know, people usually do it the other way round :P). I ❤ teaching.

I love blogging. I started off as an educational blogger, as a way to reflect on my teaching and communicate with other teachers. I have had that blog for about 3 years now. Cause I loved writing so much, I started this blog (almost 3 months now) and I now I get to talk about all me girlie stuff as well. Yayay.

I have little free time cause I am a full-time teacher (and blogger), but when I do, I like to watch my favourite YouTubers, read books, watch TV, dance, make stickers (huh?) and ride my bike (it’s a stationary bike, so  I get to multi-task as in read a magazine , listen to music, and ride my bike).

Random fact: I am partially colourblind.

What I loooove about Christmas

Love is in the air: Even in Greece, where the economy sucks at the moment and there is a lot of misery and sadness around, during Christmas, people are more happy and smiley. The atmosphere is actually more positive and  everyone just cares more!

Shiny ornaments/ decorations/glitter: everything is so pretty!!

Christmas pic 1.jpg

Giving (and taking): This is the time to share and help people, but it is also the time you receive little or big gifts (or gestures that show love). So  ❤ X 3

Yummies:Food (does this need to be explained?)

Christmas themed movies and songs: I love all Christmas-themed movies and songs!!! I watch all my romcoms over and over again and I just enjoy listening to all the music (yeap, last Christmas overload).

Carols:In Greece on the 24th and the 31st of December, kids knock on your door and sing Christmas carols (you give them some money/coins as a thank you). Lovely!!

My city: I live on an island (Crete), and while we don’t have snow and all other Christmas activities connected to snow, there are other things happening. In the center you have games for kids, the streets are all decorated, the shops are open in the morning and the afternoon, cafeterias have special events and everything is very festive (do NOT believe everything you hear on the news, yes, we are struggling, but we are hanging in there). So, I love it here during Christmas ( it isn’t that cold either, so hint hint: maybe Crete for Christmas holidays?).

Ho-Ho-Holidays: say no more……

Christmas pic 2.jpg

So, I am ending my first Blogmas post here. I will be back tomorrow with more fun stuff. If you have a blogmas post, please feel free to leave it in the comments below. I would love to connect. If you love Christmas/ the holidays, please let me know what you enjoy about these holidays.

Plan with me: November 30th-December 6th

Hi lovelies!!

This week I wanted to do something that was rose-themed. I love vintage looking roses and because December will be really Christmas-y, I thought I’d do something a bit different for the first week of December. I also started writing down more work-related things in my planner like my time table and things that need to be photocopied (big tests). If you know of any stores that have kits that are vintage looking roses, please let me know in the comments section.
