A bunch of randoms: Blogmas day 17

Blogmas logo

So it seems like my #blogmas has gone down the drain. A few days are missing. What can I say? Life happens and so does tiredness. For the past few days I have been working non-stop. I was also ill and I broke my tooth. I mean, come on! When it pours, it rains, or I really need to start taking more care of myself.

How did I break my tooth? On bread…. people! I was chewing some bread and then I heard a little ‘cling’. Yeap. It fell in my plate (kinda- don’t wanna disgust you with TMI).

I was ill. Had a fever and all that goes with that.

BUT something good….

I went for dinner with my niece who is three. The thing I ❤ about kids her age? Anything puts a smile on their face. When they are excited they are very excited.

Back to boring life…..

I spent 5 hours at the bank. Waiting for my pin number. Yes, people, welcome to the national bank of Greece. To be avoided. Period!

BUT something good and something nuts!!

I bought Christmas cards which I will be sending. Have you noticed that no one sends cards any more? I used to get loads of them and now… nada. I miss cards, so this year I decided to send a few. I suggest you send some too. It feels nice. Oh! I went to the post office and a young guy (in his twenties), who has probably never sent a letter before and has only sent emails, asked me the weirdest question. ” How do you stick the stamp on the letter?” OMG. My response, ” Ummm… you lick it.” Youngsters are victims of technology which brings us back to sending a Christmas card. No e-cards. Jump on the #sendingxmascards wagon!!

How about going to Crete for Xmas? #Blogmas day 15

Hi guys!!

If you are wondering where Blogmas 12/13 are, well they are planner-related and cause I was running around I had no time to write special #Blogmas posts#Blogmas 14 is missing cause I was sick :(.

But today I am back and coming to you with a special edition. I am going to take you around my town. Everyone (or many of you) have seen pictures of Greece during the summer, but what about winter and Christmas? I live in a town called Hania. It is on the island of Crete in Greece. So, let’s walk around my town today.

The old market

Chania has the oldest market in Greece. It is over 100 years old. It sells food, souvenirs and you can also have coffee or eat at a restaurant here.

Dentro Agora.jpg

Trying to blur out the faces. People are always in front of the market!!

Pedestrianised shopping area

There is an area full of stores, cafes and no cars are allowed. There used to be a lot of stores selling candles which is why the area was called keradika (candle area) but there aren’t any anymore.

Shops.jpg

The Venetian harbour

this is my favourite place. Very picturesque Venetian harbour with narrow streets. People go for strolls here and have drinks or food.

In this picture you see a Turkish mosque with a typical Christmas decoration (the Christmas boat instead of the Christmas tree).

Limani 1.jpg

and enjoy this view….

The lighthouse

Faros.jpg

So, why not visit Crete during Christmas? The weather is much warmer than anywhere else and you get to see how the locals spend the holidays(and it’s much cheaper).

Etsy store interview: Aestheticaddiction

Today I am talking to Katy from aestheticaddiction. She told me a few things about herself and her work. She was also kind to allow me to make a printable for you guys,to share two prints which you can use any way you want to, and a coupon code!!. Thanks so much Katy. So, let’s start by seeing what Katy had to say.

Can you tell me a few things about yourself?

My name is Katy and I live in Delaware in the US. I fell in love with drawing and design from a young age and initially taught myself Photoshop and Illustrator and basic graphic design before eventually taking classes.

How do you make your prints? What inspires you?
I make almost all of my designs in Illustrator. Sometimes I will sketch them out beforehand to get an idea of what I want. Almost everything inspires me, especially seeing what people make with my designs, that always gets me excited to design.

Any suggestions on how my readers can use your jpegs? Any tips?
It’s actually pretty incredible how versatile digital designs can be. When I first started I was blown away at all the different ways people would use my designs. They can be used in planners, labels, a lot of teachers use them in their materials, they can be printed out and used for scrap booking or card making. Really the possibilities are endless.

Where can people find you?

I actually don’t have much of a social media presence right now, I’ve been meaning to get on that!

So here are two coupon codes:

20DISC – this is good for 20% off a purchase.
50DISC – 50% of any order over $10.00

The digital paper jpegs

I am sharing with you two jpegs. You can use them any way you want except for commercial purposes. These files are for personal use only.. In order to  download them, hover over the picture and save the picture on your pc.

Printables

I made two printables. One is for the Happy Planner and the other one is for the ECLP. The prints are not the same, so you may want to print both printables.

Plan with me: December 14-20th

(#Blogmas Day 12)

Hi Lovelies!!!!!

My first Christmas spread is shiny of course, cause me love me some glitter <3. I have not used any clip art or extras. Everything is from Lilly Top stickers who was lovely enough to send me this kit. The washi is from a local store and the paper clips are my own creation. If you are wondering what the stars and love hearts are, they are all Christmas tree decorations which I turned into paperclips. I will be doing loads of stuff on the weekend and that’s why it is empty!

#Blogmas Day 11: Oh Christmas boat

Blogmas logo

So, today’s #Blogmas post is going to be short and sweet. I am going to talk about a Greek Christmas tradition. In many city centers and in some houses, instead of decorating Christmas trees, people decorate little boats. This is a very old tradition and some say (and this is what I choose to share with you first) that it is because Greece had a lot of sailors and people who worked on boats. When they would return home for Christmas their wives would decorate little boats and that’s why you see them in Greece during the holidays. It’s a way to celebrate our “nautical history”.

Others say that it is because of Saint Nick who is the patron saint of the sea and who is celebrated on the 6th of December. I prefer the 1st explanation cause it’s more lovey-dovey.

So, here is a pic my friend Marina took and I am sharing it with you guys today. This is from the center of my town; Chania, Crete.

10 things to do in Volos (Greece)

Today’s “10 things to do in….” has been written by the lovely Evi Sanida. All the suggestions and pictures are her own. So, let’s see what Evi says about Volos (Greece).

10 things to do in Volos (Greece)

This is a list of the things I love to do in the area around Volos. It is not a tourist guide but a list of my most preferable activities that wind me up when I have free time and take my mind off things.

1. My hometown is actually a few kilometers away from Volos, so, forgive me but, I will start with the place with the most open-hearted, kind and welcoming people in the world…When you visit Volos, stop by Stefanovikeio and visit Lake Karla. Lake Karla was completely drained in 1962 to gain land for agriculture but because agriculture was never successful in the saline soils, local councils have began restoring part of the lake. Nowadays, it is home to many species of birds like storks, pelicans, flamingos as well as ducks and fish. Walking by the lake you will immediately feel refreshed, close to nature and try to find some more time to explore the landscape. This is the view from the church of Saint Athanasios.Pic 1.jpg2. While in the area, don’t miss the chance to visit another one of my favourite places. The church of Saint George. Located on the way to Kanalia, another village next to the lake, you will be impressed by the spirituality of the place and the quietness of the landscape. Built in 1915 entirely by stone, and surrounded by tall trees, the church welcomes visitors with picnic benches and amazing nature all year round.

church.jpg3. Now, in Volos, start your day with a stroll along the seafront. You won’t regret this variety of colours and smells. Small, colourful fishing boats at one end and luxurious yachts on the other end. Meanwhile, the cafes offer you tasty freshly-baked croissants or cheese pie along with your coffee so a stop there is a must.

limani.jpg4. I left this visit for number three although it should have been number one mainly because it is the reason why Volos is so famous. TSIPOURO. The drink that will make you forget to return home. The reason why so many people in Volos have big bellies and rosy cheeks. The meeting place for young and old. Our tsipouradika (places where they serve tsipouro) can be found all the way along the coast, in the city centre, hidden in smaller, unknown roads and they all serve –oooooh, my God- so tasty and freshly cooked fish and seafood that you will hardly have the courage to do anything else after that.

faghto.jpg

5. But really, don’t leave this city without tasting our local speciality. A soft bread stuffed with cheese, ham and a tomato sauce. When you order it, add French fries and some special mayonnaise sauce with ham. It’s worth visiting Volos just to eat this treat.

bread.jpg6. In the heart of the city, lies its most hectic area. The shops here cater for all your needs, while the local cafes, restaurants and bars can host everyone and offer you high quality services. I love morning strolls for (window)shopping that end up in upbeat conversations with my friends at the central cafes.

coffee.jpg7. Another reason why I absolutely love this place is Pelion. Really. If you haven’t been there you’re missing lots of things. Now, here, I don’t know where to start from. In Katihori, you will enjoy the most amazing view of Volos. In Portaria, you’ll eat the best meat. In Makrinitsa you’ll take the most picturesque pictures while strolling in stone paths that lead to the central square. In Zagora enjoy misty mornings while in Milies, you’ll see the traditional and world-famous train station and in Chania do some skiing or snowboarding in the winter, in Milopotamos or Agios Ioannis dive in crystal-clear waters….someone stop me, the list is going to be endless.

Pelio.jpg

8. Another of my favourite places is the Roof tile and Brickworks museum (or else Tsalapata) where you can get informed about the long history of brick making of the old factory. What is more amazing is that the museum is actually the old factory itself and the visitor follows the actual process of brick making. In the museum, there are also interactive screens and videos of people who used to work there, so it is (to say the least) a work of art!

brickowrks.jpg

9. And since I love my friends, I love company, I love food and I definitely can’t live without music, in Palaia, an area located right at the entrance of the city, I love to hang around listening to traditional live music in tavernas with young people who are always willing to sing along and dance till morning.

mic.jpg10. Now, to tell you the truth Volos is never running out of things to do every time of year, but since Christmas is on the way, the best is yet to come. So, as soon as the city lights are on, I promise to give you a taste of the festive city which will attract thousands of people from all over Greece. The lights are being put on, Santa’s village is being constructed and the skating rink is getting ready. Tons of hot chocolate are being brought and the red carpets are going to be laid soon all over the city pavements while Christmas music is being played. So, stay tuned for number 10, which is the best and it is yet to come! I’ll be back!

Once again, many thanks to Evi for writing this post. You can find more of Evi’s pictures on Flickr. For permission to repost the pictures please leave a comment below and I will give you her email.

So, why not travel to Volos for Christmas?

11 blogging habits: Do you see any of yours here?#Blogmas Day 10

Blogmas logo
My blogging style
I have been edu blogging for about 3 years now, but it’s only been three months since I started this blog where I write about makeup, shopping, planning and other ‘girlie/lifestyle’ posts. A while back I wrote a blog post about my blogging style for my edu- blog inspired by a teacher called Zhenya) and I thought it would be a good idea to repost my original post but adapt it and talk about my writing style and blogging habits now. So, let me begin by saying that I find it weird when someone calls me a blogger and this actually defines my blogging style. I am a blogger but I don’t feel like a blogger (then again, what does that feel like?). Do I make sense? (Nah) So, anyway, let’s get down to business! What are my blogging habits? How do I blog?
 makeup with colour
Blogging habit #1

So, I guess from what you can already see from the first lines of this post, I blog the way I talk. For me, blogging is like chatting with my friends over coffee and cakes. So, if you expect me to be more ‘proper’ forget it! Actually, my blog posts are more like spontaneous speech moments (is that even a word/phrase?) and less like a written text. I have a blurt-y blog.

Blogging habit #2

Checking: I spell-check and read my texts once, maybe twice. So, one of my weaknesses is that you may come across a little mistake, a typo or some odd dangling modifier in my blog posts (Luckily, when people spot a mistake, they let me know so I edit. You know who you are : ). Why do I do this? I do not know! I am a teacher for God’s sake! I should be checking my writing already!! Maybe when you always correct other people’s mistakes, you stop noticing yours, or your brain just gives up on you and doesn’t respond to your mistakes or yada, yada, yada. I think it is mostly cause I don’t consider blogging as part of my job. I don’t think it is teaching. It is something fun for me and my ideas bubble up, so when I want them to come out, that’s what they do. They pop out!! I blurt em out!!  I also do not really realise/comprehend how many or if anyone reads what I write, so I am like, “Eh, it’s me writing to myself. You just need to check once, twice and then publish”.
Blogging habit #3

I stay up late at night or do not take a siesta cause I want to write a blog post. You want something even worse? I wake up at night and take notes of the things I want to share. I actually have a pencil and a note pad on my bedside table (seriously… should I start worrying about habits #2 & #3?).

Notebooks

Blogging habit #4

To write or not to write?: I have unfinished posts. I have a lot of ideas about things I want to write about. I start writing one post and then start writing another one. The one that inspires me the most is the lucky duck post. It’s the one that gets finished first.  The other posts just sit around waiting for TLC. I often write the outline of a blog post on the post’s page. That way I have the backbone ready when I come back to it later. The posts that take longer to write are the ones that have the unfinished ‘statuses’. They are also the ones that require research. Writing about my thoughts on an issue is easier than reviewing a product.
Blogging habit #5
I write about the things I am interested in. My blogging is like a me, me ,me fest. I write about the things I enjoy, and hopefully someone else, in a land far, far away will like it as well.
Blogging habit #6
My writing style is simple. I don’t really use fancy words. I sometimes cross reference, I cite, I plan more, I draft and redraft. On a more personal note here: I do feel that my writing has improved a bit since I first started blogging, so that is rewarding.
Blogging habit #7

I like chain or blog challenges at least as an edu blogger, cause as a newbie lifestyle blogger I haven’t really taken part in tags and stuff. I enjoy taking part in them. They are like taking a road trip with others.

Car in rural Crete

Blogging habit #8
Playful blog posts: I use emoticons or smiley faces (sometimes sad faces : (  as well). I use direct speech. I like using bullet points, but I rarely use numbers in my lists. I like using color as well. I think it adds character to my blog posts and emphasizes some of the points I want to make (but I am colour blind so sometimes i forget what colour I have been using :p)!
Blogging habit #9
I try to write regularly, at least three posts a week. Sometimes I stick to my plan, others I don’t! At the moment I have been very good cause I am doing #Blogmas and have written at least one post a day (which by the way is generating a lot of traffic so it’s fun and productive).
Blogging habit #10
Once I have written a blog post, I start sharing. I share on Facebook, Twitter, Stumbleupon, and Pinterest. I also schedule my posts on Buffer. I sometimes promote a post on Instagram as well.
Blogging habit #11
I pay attention or at least try to pay attention to my pictures. I try to have a white background and pretty things in my backgrounds. I think I need to invest in a camera (for dummies) and it is on my wish list. Unfortunately being colour blind limits my photo editing capabilities cause I have no freakin idea what’s going on with me colours!!!
Blogging habit that tops all the other blogging habits
I ramble, but I guess you already know that cause of the name of my blog : ) (see top of this page).
Notes to my future blogger self:
  • I need to proof read and edit myself more, and then even more.
  • I need to get out of my comfort zone and maybe even write about something I don’t really know that well.
  • I want to improve my writing skill. I need to look into courses on writing (maybe even creative writing).
  • I need to stop using the word so so much.
A final note

A friend of mine once told me “Joanna, you really like laughing at your own jokes” I think that applies to my blog posts as well. I smile when I write cause I think I am funny and I draw joy from my posts. I edu blog cause I love teaching and I have a lifestyle-ish blog cause I ❤ pretty things!!

Almost done….
I am really thankful to the people who actually read, comment and share my posts.  It feels like I am doing something right in the Blogosphere. Having two blogs is not easy. I hadn’t thought it through carefully.

A soup, a nap and a yucky tray: #Blogmas Day 9

Blogmas logo

Hello! Hello! Lovely person reading my blog!! Thanks for stopping by. Today I thought I’d tell you what I did today (that’s a lot of todays in one line).

A.M. to P.M.

I didn’t sleep well. Dunno wy. I kept waking up, tossing and turning. I looked at my phone a few times, I even watched a YouTube video in the middle of the night.

Wakey wakey

I  got up at around 8:30. I washed my face and because I was feeling a bit off I used my Tea tree facial wash (it wakes me up. You can read a review here). I then had breakfast aka a coffee and a toasted cheese and turkey sandwich. I brushed my teeth, put on my Clinique BB cream and went to work. Where is work? Another room in my house (huh! gotcha!)

Work

You see, I am an online teacher. I teach business English. I am in Crete, Greece,  and my learners are somewhere in France. All business people cause I teach Business English. I had lessons from 10-3:00. There were a few breaks and during my breaks I rode my bike a bit. Two songs were on repeat. This one:

The video clip is so beautiful and the song’s message is so strong.

and this one:

So, I did a bit of working out whilst on my ‘work break’.

Extra info: I had a few extra minutes with my learners and I read an article with them.Today’s article was 13 things airlines don’t want to tell you. Random fact? Umm you know the trays that airlines put our food on? Yeah. They don’t wash ’em between flights.(Yuck).

3:00

I then decided I had to go get some chewies and gamble… yeap yeap. Lottery time. After that I went home and had my soup.

My soup recipe

Oh!Before you get over excited and think to yourself, ” Yay! A recipe! take a minute. This ain’t that type of blog”. I don’t cook. Whenever anyone asks me if I cook, I say, ” does boiling count?” So, I am not a cook. I am a boiler (haha that sounds funny). This is my favourite soup recipe cause I use all my cooking expertise. So, how do I make this soup? I just chuck in any veggies I have. This time I chucked in corn, brussel sprouts, green peas, broccoli and a knor vegetable stock. I boiled the vegetables in a big pot with extra water so they could be soupified ( see how good I am at… cooking?). I then added a few tea spoons of olive oil. They say (dieticians) that it’s better to add the olive oil at the end cause…. something about the fat and the toxins, dunno why. You just need to add it at the end.

Napping

So, soup was in my belly and then the most important part of the day. Siesta!! I slept for about 30 mins. Woke up and started writing this blog post. In a few minutes my students (kids) are going to come to my house for an exam class. In Greece people take exams to certify their level of proficiency. The kids coming over in a bit have been having lessons for a while now, so they are about to take exams. So, I will be teaching until 8:30. Then I am gonna watch my YouTubers’ vlogmas videos and unwind. Then sleep time. Yeap. I know. I live an adventurous life. Welcome to my life. A stay at home… teacher/boiler/blogger. ❤  ❤

Another thing you don’t need to know about me?

I got a cool pressie. A lovely girlie/glitter picture/painting. Love it. My sister got it for me cause she was in Athens for the weekend.

Pressie

So, that’s all for #Blogmas Day 9. Feel free to tell me what you did today. I would really love to hear from you especially since you lasted till here, the end of the post. Give this a thumbs up (aka ‘like’ if you liked it). Don’t forget to follow/subscribe to my blog. I am @mypinkrambles on Instagram and Twitter. You can follow me on Pinterest as well.

The PlannerPage: Etsy store Interview

Today’s Etsy store interview is with Erin from the PlannerPage. So, let’s see what Erin told me.

Hi Erin! Thanks for agreeing to this interview! Can you tell me a bit about yourself?

I have always been into crafting. I learned to knit, cross stitch and scrapbook when I was very young and would even go to expos and classes with my aunt.  I got into stamping and card making a bit afterwards which has come in handy as I have started stamping in my planner!  I have always been someone who needs to make lists and write my week/day down on paper.  Discovering the planner community has been a joy, since crafting has gotten the back-burner since college.  As far as what I do for a living. I am a neonatal nurse and absolutely LOVE my job!

How and why did you start making planner inserts?

I had been binge watching planner videos on YouTube and honestly had watched 100s, I nearly ran out of videos to watch. I had watched videos from the YouTubers with 1M subscribers to those with only a handful. I had looked specifically on Etsy for personal planner inserts that were WO2P with a vertical layout that I could use all the stickers I had bought for my MAMBI planner (which I ended up not liking) and could not find anyone that sold or would make them.  So I decided to use my previous experience with computer design to make them myself! J Then I thought I should use my immense interest in this new hobby for some good and open a shop selling inserts that are different from those currently on the Etsy market. There are a lot of printable shops but not many sell printed inserts.  Not only would this give me a great outlet for this new obsession (as my friends and family like to tell me!), but potentially help me raise some money for the upcoming Haiti trip I will be attending to provide medicine to those with limited to no access to healthcare, food, or water.

That is so lovely!!! What inspires you?

In summary: Helping people. Helping others is my job professionally and just part of who I am, it makes me happy.  I started selling inserts hoping they would suit individuals’ lifestyle and possibly help them achieve planner peace. J For that reason I am always looking for specific requests because I can only design inserts that fit someone perfectly if they describe what would help their individual needs.

What can someone find at your Etsy store?Any favourite types of stickers?

I sell printed planner inserts. I started with only personal size but have slowly introduced half letter size for A5 binders. I would also be happy to make pocket-size.  I make weekly and monthly pages, many of which incorporate grid note sections, I felt a lot of people like grid over lines or blank space. I also make various lifestyle type inserts: note pages, workout logs, pet health records, grocery lists, weekly overviews, goal setting, financial trackers etc. I am always adding inserts!  My favorite type of stickers are the repositionable ones, specifically from PlannerStickerJubilo they are amazing!

If you could turn back time to the day you opened your store, what advice would you give yourself? Any top tips?

Take your time to take high quality pictures, specifically with a decorated insert as an example of how you could set up the pages. I find those are my highest viewed and purchased inserts.  Now I am going back and doing this for more of my listings.  Presentation is huge when starting a shop. No one can know the quality of your product if they haven’t had in their hands, therefore they must be drawn to purchasing it based on your presentation.

How would describe a typical day in the life of an Etsy store owner?

Researching and brainstorming ideas. I do this mainly by watching YouTube videos and seeing how people describe their days in their plan with me videos and planner set ups.  I try to design inserts I believe would suit them. I listen for what people wish they could change from their current planners set ups/ inserts. I also make inserts that are useful for myself, hoping they can also be incorporated into others lifestyles.

Now let’s move on to planning.  How do you plan?

I like to use personal sized inserts, week on 2 pages. I plan mainly functionally with stickers and stamps. I love to leave room for lists to add to throughout the week. I like to use my planner more than just to plan but also as a resource and tracker for myself.

5 books I will be reading during Xmas: #Blogmas Day 8

Blogmas logo

Today’s post is going to be about books that I have purchased over the months and plan to read during my holidays. I will be off work from the 23rd of December till the 7th of January (Yup! Perks of being a teacher ❤  ). My book choices are more ‘girlie lovey dovey, so if you are into that keep reading, if you are not, well sowie folks (but will you subscribe to my blog anyway? < 3 ), I guess this one is not for you.

So here is my list. I have added the links to Amazon (affiliate links) in case you are intrigued, in spendy mood, or just wanna read with me and have a book… chat?

Daniel Levitin The organised mind

OK! I am kinda cheating here. I have already read up to page 40. This book is about how we can think straight in the age of information overload. Levetin explains “why smart organisation improves our memory, our attention spam and even our imagination”. Random fact I read in this book so far:

When your brain says that you are looking for your red sweater, your eye’s red cones (the cones that see re) are more alert and block the rest of the colour cones/neuron thingies, which makes it easier to spot/remember where the red is (or something along those lines). I am colour blind, so I have an excuse to not remember where something read is and a reason to remember this random piece of info.

Graeme Simsion The Rosie Project

Again, I have read a bit of this book. It is about luv (of course) and the ‘science’ of it. It tells the story of a handsome geneticist who is searching for the perfect partner. He even makes a questionnaire. It’s fun. I have giggled quite a bit (the hero in the story is clueless :P). You can get the book here.

I got this one but never read it, so now is the time!!

Bridget Jones Mad about the boy Helen Fielding.

Yeah, well, gotta read up on my Bridget adventures!! Not saying anything about this one. You can get this one here.

All the bright places by Jennifer Nivan

I guess this one is for younger readers, but I thought it would be interesting. It’s about a youngster who wants to die and a girl who wants to save him. So, lovey dovey with a bit of drama. You can get this one here.

Finally, a historical novel.

Suzannah Dunn The Queen’s Sorrow

This book is about Mary Tudor and her marriage to Philip the Prince of Spain. She wants to be close to him, he ignores her and then England suffers.  I have already read a couple of books by Dunn and I really enjoyed them , so I am sure this will be interesting as well. You can get the book here.

So, this is on my list for my break and some of the books I am reading now.  Follow my blog so you never ever miss a post from meeeee. I am @mypinkrambles on Twitter and Instagram so connect with me there and check out my pinterest board for stuff I pin.Noemie from Down the rocky road wrote her list of Christmas books.
