My Huff Post Story: getting Published & Plagiarised

Hi everyone,

Today I thought I’d share with you my own Huffington Post story. I will talk to you about how I got published, I will share my posts with you, and what happened after I got published. In the end, I will give you my words of wisdom (aka what I really think).

The beginning

So, I started blogging here about 8 months ago and I joined a few Facebook groups to get a few ideas and figure out how I could become better at more general/ lifestyle-ish blogging. From time to time I would see people in these groups talk about being published on the Huff Post and how great that was. I knew the Huffington Post, I read it from time to time, and thought to myself, ” Hey! I will give this a shot” and I did.

1st attempt

I filled in a bloggers form. This is a page that you can fill in and upload your post. My post was something very dear to me. I thought it was a good post and actually believed if I ever had an opportunity at being shared, it would be with this post. I clicked the submit button.

No response.

I then read that many people were emailing Arianna Huffington herself, so I did.

No response.

A few months went by and I wrote another post. I thought I’d give it one more shot and that’s when I heard back from Arianna.

What happens once you get the OK?

You get an email saying that your post has been accepted and you will be receiving a new email with passwords to set up your blogger profile/page.That happened and then I made my profile. The hardest part for me was choosing a decent picture. Yeap. I know. Vain but, well, don’t wanna look like crap in my Huff Post Profile! I actually asked my friends which one they preferred the most. Most of them agreed on this one pic. I disagreed, and chose a completely different one!!

Then?

Well, once you submit your post it gets published in one or two days.

Tips?

I learnt this the hard way, so I am going to tell you a few secrets.

  1. Always choose a picture from the royalty free image section the Huff Post blogger page gives you cause otherwise you end up sharing your post with no picture appearing except for some boxes.
  2. Add links to your page cause that way people can come to your website. I actually added the phrase

If you want to read more of my adventures, make sure you check out my blog at http://www.mypinkrambles.com

at the end of my blog post and it got published without any editing.

     3. Make sure you proofread your article and don’t rush to press submit.

Huff post story pin.jpg

Is it worth the fuss?

Well, this depends on why you are sharing your post on the Huffington Post website. It looks good on your media kit. I was happy to see my name on a bigger platform. I enjoyed seeing the ‘likes’ and the comments on Facebook or my other social media.I did get approached by a few websites to write a few blog posts for them though (unpaid) and actually did write one.

BUT my page views did not go up. I only got 20-30 extra page views whenever one of my posts was shared. I did not get blog subscribers from this experience.

And anything else?

Oh yeah! Now the good part. I got plagiarised! 4 times. My blog post, the one I wrote about opening and closing a business in Greece, got copy pasted on websites and two personal blogs. Everything!! Like…. every single word. The irony is that the plagiarists were Americans talking about going to university in Greece and opening a language school in Greece. I mean…. c’mon!!! One of my plagiarists was actually in publishing!!! What did I do? Well, I sent messages and tweets to the websites and asked them to take my post down or at least mention me as the writer. I also contacted the Huffington Post.Nothing has happened though. I will now take harsher measures against these websites. Do keep in mind that some websites can repost a Huff Post article, but this was not the case!

Will I write again?

Sure! It’s just me sharing something I have already shared here, so why not? It’s not like I have a super-duper popular blog and am missing out on traffic. It’s not like my Huff Post blog posts are reducing my DA numbers.

So, there you have. Now my words of wisdom.

WOF

I say go for it. Try it at least once. So, you don’t get paid. Big woop. Did you start blogging cause you wanted to become a rich blogger?

Confessions of a blogger: finding time and struggling…. a lot

A few moments later……..

This post is probably the most random post I have written so far. I started off wanting to write about one thing and then I started feeling sorry for myself which lead to a completely irrelevant ending. So, here is today’s post.

I work a lot. Like all day long. Literally. I teach Business English online in the morning and I teach kids English in the afternoon. I also blog. I have two blogs. One is an educational blog and the other one is this one which is, let’s call it lifestyle-ish/ beauty-ish or a Me, Me,Me blog.

My edublog has been there for about 3 years and this one is almost 8 months old. Trying to juggle life, work and blogging is hard. Today, I want to talk a bit about blogging and how I find time for it.

How do you find time for blogging?

I don’t.

I make time for blogging.

That’s the answer. I do not have time to blog. I mean I should be working out or cleaning the house or something but I don’t instead I make time to blog. For me, at the moment, blogging is my creative outlet. I do it for fun. Even if I write about what I bought, it’s fun. It’s like hanging out with the gals and showing stuff.

Yes, I work all day, but I do have free time and when I have free time instead of say watch TV, I blog.

What do you mean by ” make time”?

Well, in the mornings I am a freelance online Business English teacher (yes, that does sound fancy). What that means though is that I am home in front of my pc from 9-3 teaching. I do not have a set timetable though, and I may have gaps between lessons. That’s when I write.

I also blog late at night instead of reading a book (I feel a bit guilty about that one).

I do not always have time to finish a blog post. I have lots of posts that are in draft form which I continue writing whenever I have ten or fifteen minutes, here and there. That helps me have content.

The hardest thing

I don’t know about you guys, but the hardest thing about blogging for me isn’t making time to blog, but making time to share my posts. Dedicating time for all the social media. Yes, I have Buffer and I schedule posts. I use Pinterest and have a Facebook page for my blog, but sharing takes more time and it sometimes feels like it is not worth it. I often see that my page views are from an ‘unknown source’. Whatever that means! I am still baffled as far as Instagram is concerned. I am amazed by how up and downsy my twitter following is.

I am “spoilt”

In terms of my edublog. I do not have these problems. Finding time, sharing and trying to help the blog grow. I do nothing and people read my posts. It just sits there and gets page views. I think it’s because I have had it for a longer time and because I share material which teachers can download and use in class.

This random blog (yeah, I am talking about this one. The one you are reading now. If you are actually bravce enough and have reached this part!) does not have content that will make the reader come back. Actually scratch that, there are some planner printables which make readers (new readers) visit my page but that’s it. They do not follow or subscribe. They get what they need and go.

Other thoughts

I had to give this section a title cause it doesn’t make sense and has nothing to do with finding/making time to blog. I often get discouraged. You see, while I do tell myself that I blog because it’s fun and I like writing (I actually think I am quite good at it. Yeap. Me getting a big head). I am not happy with my page views. That for me is a reality check. I am lying to myself when I say I write because it’s fun opr maybe I should say, I half lie. I do have fun, but I also want people to read what I write and enjoy it as well. Find it interesting and on some days my page views are like close to 0.

That is discouraging which makes me realise that I am not just writing for fun. I am writing because I want something to come out of all this writing. I do not know what though.

Isn’t that funny? Why write when you have no clear goals? Or do I have goals that I am scared to word?

Finding time and blogging.jpg

Dunno fellow blogger. This blog post feels like a whole lot of nothing, but anyways, I am sharing some thoughts with you guys and waiting for words of wisdom from you guys. How do you keep going. Why do you keep going? Why do you make time?

That’s all for today.

Oh! Yeah! Don’t forget to subscribe to my blog (follow me somewhere or add me to your Bloglovin thingy).

Thanks for sticking around. If you actually stuck around.

12 Catchy Phrases every 40-year-old hears once in a while

There are certain things a woman who is close to her forties and over, will hear about being single and today I am going to share with you some of those ‘catchy’ phrases. My approach is of course on the humorous side, while theirs is on the ‘helpful’ side.

‘Catchy/helpful’ Quotes

You need to find a man.

Which is followed by the question,

Why can’t you find a man?

You remain silent and they jump in offering  myriad explanations.

  • You are too picky

Yes. That’s it. I am picky. That must be it.”There are so many men out there. You are smart and beautiful and yada yada yada”.

That of course is better than

  • You are so unlucky
  • You need to be more sexy. quiet, talkative, provocative, seductive or whatever other alluring adjective missing from your 40-year-old “person specifications”

Or

  • You need to take more ‘care’ of yourself

What exactly, about myself/ my appearance, do you want me to change?

  • You must be doing something wrong

Wrong? What do you mean wrong? Hmm let me think about that one. Reality check ‘my friend’. I am being me.

Something is wrong with you

See if you are forty and single then something MUST be wrong with you. Like c’mon. You have met so many people. You must have met someone by now. What IS wrong with you?

You choose the wrong men.

Maybe I did/have but then again so do 50% of the divorced couples. You see I can say I am divorced minus the marriage.

Now time for a GOOD ones (this coming from the mean girls/boys)

You are never going to find a man at this age.

Do you think you are getting any younger?

Followed by

How are you gonna have babies?

OK! Fair point but then again, there are ways, you know the one about the birds and the bees?

OR

Don’t you want to settle down and have kids?

Hmmm. I guess I don’t.

You need to act your age

Aka you shouldn’t be going out till late, you should have a purpose in life, why are you wasting your life?

You long-lost friend sees you after many, many years. The conversation goes something like this:

So!! How are you?

Good. You?

Oh! I am great thanks. So are you married? Kids?

Ummm. Nope and nope.

Oh! OR Oh! Don’t worry, you will find someone.

I will find someone…… “in a bag of chips” as we say in Greece.

Then this one which is supposed to be funny.

You are gonna die alone with your bags/shoes/dogs/cats etc.

Followed once more by the

You must be doing something wrong.

111111111.jpg

Well, I am a bag lady , so I will have my bags. Dunno about the rest of you lovelies. Guess what though,

I am happy and single. Gimme a break.

What do you think? Have I forgotten anything? Don’t forget to follow this blog or me somewhere, somehow (check the sidebar on how to ‘connect’).

My most ‘liked’ Instagram photos

Hi guys,

One of the hardest parts of blogging for me is taking nice pics. Instagram is the social media platform I am struggling the most with. I do like taking pictures though and I thought I’d ‘write’ (term used very lightly) a post about my most popluar Instagram pictures.Oh! I am @mypinkrambles on Instagram (and Twitter). So, let’s start with my favourite. I took this in Paleohora (Chania, Crete). I just like how everything lines up.

How my bestie, the Visa, became my frenemy

She’s like a best friend. Someone who knows all your dirty little secrets. Jumps in to help when you need it and is by your side all the time. She is ready to party when you are, and she loves shopping. Best bud ever, my Visa.

But things change when reality hits ya. When your pink little bubble bursts and your bills start piling up. You realise this is just a card and you have no money. Well, that’s what happens if you are anything like me.

Hmmm so today’s post is going to be a post about me and my ex bestie; the credit card. Maybe I should have started my post like this,

Hi! My name is Joanna and I have been card free for 5 years and 3 months.

cause shopping can be an addiction.

So, let’s go down memory lane,  shall we?

I got my 1st credit card a year after I finished university. I was gonna conquer the world. I needed clothes and stuff to conquer it though, so I used my credit card. You see the first year after uni, I was not really working that much. I was making peanuts, but I would still go shopping even though I knew that I could not pay off my expenses. My mind set was more like,

Hey, I will pay as much as I can now, and will pay everything off when I have a proper job.

And I shopped, and paid for stuff, and shopped some more. I was a happy gal back in the day. Clueless actually. My credit card got a friend, a 2nd card, and then I got a 3rd one. As long as I was working and paying some of the credit off, I was fine. Of course the interest  was so high that everything I was buying ended up costing me a fortune, but hey, I was gonna pay it off.

I was gonna pay it off.

And then reality hit me. How was I going to pay it off? When? I was in debt. Something needed to go. And something did go. I went to the bank and asked for my credit cards to be revoked. One bank said “no”. But since when did I take no for an answer? I took out the big guns. I used scissors to cut up my credit cards, so now I definitely couldn’t shop cause I didn’t have a card.

Things I should have told myself the day I got my card

No! You do not need the same pair of shoes in two colours. One is enough.

Yes, the bag/ shoe is pretty in both the white and black version, but I do not need it. I do not have the money (like the paper money) to pay for it, so I am not going to get it.

One card is enough.

You may not believe me when I say this, but I do think credit cards can be helpful in emergencies, but  shoes are not an emergency. One card is enough.

My bank may give me a high shopping/credit limit, but I do not need it to be that high.

In Greece if you are a good customer, your card limit goes up. I was a good customer and my limit was going up and up. I was shopping and shopping.

Don’t be secretive about your credit card shopping sprees.

The more I started talking about my shopping and my debt, the more guilty I felt. Reality started hitting me. You see, my debt was not just a letter I chucked in a drawer. It was real. A topic of discussion and embarrassment. In fact, only when I started talking about the actual money I owed, did I start really worrying and wanted to take action.

What do I do now?

I still shop and have fun but I only use cash or my Debit card (which is my money on my card). I also avoid going to the stores with too much cash on me, so I don’t get tempted. I have a shopping budget. I have paid off 2/3 credit cards. I have one to pay off. Every month I pay a sum, so my debt goes down. I do not stress myself out though. Slow and steady wins the race. I don’t want a new credit card because I realise that I am not good with money and I do love me my stuff. A debit card and cash are fine. If I was better at disciplining myself, then yeah, sure. But I am not and that’s a fact.

Double Wear Makeup vs. Makeup on the Go (Compact)

Hi everyone,

I am a big fan of the Estee Lauder Double Wear foundation/makeup line. I already had the Double Wear stay in place makeup (in the bottle) and I now bought the Compact Double Wear Makeup to Go which is a more light version of the product. I thought I’d test them out and see the difference between the two products. So, here goes.

21222

Me with no makeup

I have dry/sensitive skin. I have lots of red spots but no acne or things like that. I am 40 years old.

1No makeup

Double Wear Makeup to Go

In this picture you can see the Double Wear light Compact. I have it in the shade 2C3 Fresco. It is quite watery and feels light on the skin. I have been wearing it for  five minutes now and I do feel like something watery/oily is on my skin. It doesn’t feel bad.  The makeup is on the right half of my face. I used 4 little pumps of product. I say that the coverage is fine. It looks as if I am not wearing anything and it does cover the redness/ spots. Take for example the little red scar on my top lip. The ‘light’ version did cover it up quite well.

1Light

Double Wear Stay in Place Makeup

Now on the left hand side I have applied the Double Wear foundation. I am using the shade 1N2. The coverage is full. It takes much more time to blend. I think the foundation sits better on my skin. I have been taking pictures and walking around the house with my makeup on for about 45 minutes now and I still feel the ‘light’ version.

1 double.jpg

In both cases I used a foundation brush and then a stippling brush. Looking at the picture I can see that the foundation (on the left) looks a bit lighter than the compact.  I can tell you that when I wear it, it makes my skin look flawless/porcelain like. I may also need to change colour/ shade though (but looking at the bottom pictures I am not sure. In real life it looks fine. I will look into this!).

Full Face

Now I then moved on to my other steps. I applied some concealer (Estee Lauder Double Wear Brush on Gow). My Chanel Les Beiges (health glow sheer powder). L’oreal Le Blush no. 165. Some highlighter from Makeup Academy. My lip stick is Plum Pop (Clinique) and my mascara is Lancome Grandiose (Violet).

Packaging of products

Compact vs. bottle

One thing I hate about my Double Wear foundation is the packaging. It is heavy and in a bottle. I spilt it once and almost lost all the product. You also have to pour it onto something or your brush when using and that can be messy

The compact is light and easy to carry around. It has a small mirror and comes with a sponge. It has a little button/ pump thing which you press and the product pops out. That can get a bit messy. It does look secure though. I haven’t walked around the city with it in my bag, so have no idea if there is a possibility of an accident.

My verdict

I like both. I will use the compact for more everyday makeup and the bottle foundation for more heavy-duty going out occasions. I do have to point out that I know that the double wear foundation (bottle) lasts all day long. It does not budge. Promise!

I want to finish off by saying that I am not a makeup artist. I am a teacher who loves makeup. There may be techniques or mistakes in the way I apply my products, but this is how I do it. The purpose of the post is to test the coverage and see the differences and I hope you have a ‘picture’ of that now.

My favourite YouTubers

Hi everyone,

I love decompressing after work or during my leisure time  whilst watching YouTube videos. I will start off by telling you what I like watching though. I like hauls, anything related to makeup (first impressions, hauls are my favourites). Not really that interested in turtorials. I also like watching anything clothes/ handbag related as well. Cause I am in Greece, I enjoy watching YouTubers from other countries especially when they go out for food (us Greeks and our food!). Finally, I also tend to watch women who have/ had a career. I don’t like YouTubers who don’t breathe when they talk (just babble 24/7)! So, now, about one paragraph later, let’s check out some of my favourite channels.

Elle Florence

I recently discovered Elle. She is a lawyer who lives in Canada. She does about beauty, bags (<3 <3)  and books (love and love), she also does vlogs. she is very eloquent and I enjoy watching her videos.

Ms Goldgirl

I have been watching Marnie’s videos for probably more than two years now. She used to be a teacher (extra points there). She lives in the US and does lots of beauty reviews, hauls, and special one minute videos where she informs her viewers about sales and important things that she finds out about and wans us, the viewers, to know about.. She is not afraid to say what she thinks and I trust her opinion. She also answers comments which is great!

Kristina (Aka pretty sparkly shiny)

Kristina is a doctor. I enjoy seeing what it’s like for a busy gal who has such a demanding job to be a YouTuber as well. She does vlogs and beauty hauls, product reviews. She is also quite techy and talks about gadgets and stuff ( I am clueless) and LV is a word that often comes up on her channel.

Tati

She does lots of reviews and Hot Or Not videos, lots of hauls and is very makeup oriented. I like that. It’s like watching the news for makeup. One of my favourite types of videos is where she buys really expensive products (e.g. LV lipstick), tries them out and then says if they are worth the splurge or not.

Busbee style

I heard about Erin from Marnie. She is a stylist and a mom. She does lots of video about what to wear, the trends etc. She has also done a video where she styled her friend and I thought that was a great idea.

Mimi Ikonn

Mimi lives in London but has family in Canada (she used to live there). She does a lot of travelling and is more on the alternative side. Her vlogs and videos clear and crispy. Very instagrammable. She is lovely to watch.

So, there you have it. If you are not subscribed to these channels, yu should definitely check them out and subscribe. Don’t forget to ‘follow’ me somewhere, somehow (scroll up to the sidebar on ways to connect). I have been doing #BEDA, so press that category if you want to check out some more April blog posts.

How Greek is my Big Fat Greek wedding?

I saw my big fat Greek wedding 2 a couple of days ago and started thinking about how true the things shown in the movie are. As a gal who lives in ‘contemporary’ Greece and someone who grew up in Australia, I have experienced both sides of Greekness. That’s why  I had to write this post. I just had to. So, here goes:

How true/realistic are the things shown in the movie?

Meddling

Yeap. The family meddles a lot. You have a mama’s gal and a papa’s boy. You have kids living with their parents till they get married (that’s more cause of the economy if you ask me). When there is drama, the first person to call is your mum, then the whole family knows. Weddings are big, family gatherings are big. Family and meddling go hand in hand.

Flags/ statues

OK, so, some people (in Greece) do have flags hanging from their balconies but that’s only on national holidays or when we win a big match or something. I was very curious about statues though. Do people actually buy/have statues in their gardens? Well, a little birdie told me that their family has a small statue in their yard (they live abroad, not in Greece). So, that’s correct too!!!

Greek

Food

Food is very important. When you are invited somewhere, you eat. The more food you eat, the better it is. You better not make the mistake and say you are not hungry when you go to a Greek’s house. Food gets shoved down your mouth anyways!! Not eating food is considered rude.

Music

Yes, we sing  (a lot), dance ( a lot) and music is a very important part of our lives. All Greeks think they can sing.We have lots of special songs to celebrate things.

Loud

Yes. Very loud. When we talk, you think we are arguing, but we aren’t. Nope. We are just chatting :).

But

We don’t think cleaning products solve everything. We do not think that all words derive from ancient Greek (although most do :p).

I am not going to review the movie, cause well, I don’t want to. I think I liked the first one better though.

Till the next post folks.

The One where I got Plagiarised

I was so happy yesterday because 2 of my posts got shared on the Huffington Post. A much bigger platform than my blog featured my writing. Nothing changed for my blog. I mean, I didn’t get a ton of page views or followers, but I got to tell my story. I shared my thoughts and I was so happy and then everything changed!

My post was plagiarised by 4people who copied my article. 4 websites have copy pasted my post onto their platforms and my name is nowhere. I mean, I am OK with people sharing my stuff. Reblogging and mentioning me doesn’t bother me. I wanted it though to have been attributed to me. I was the writer, not X.

I am a teacher and I teach academic English.Helping students to avoid plagiarism is one of the things I do. One of the reasons people plagiarise is because they don’t know how to rephrase and I get that. Another reason is because they do not realise they are plagiarising. In some cultures, according to research copying the source shows respect (yup). But copy pasting every single word and not saying anything?

Fellow bloggers, who know hard it is to come up with ideas, to write properly, to find time to write, end up copying every single word I wrote and passing it off as their own? That sucks!

What did I do?

I have left comments on the websites that plagiarised my articles, but they are awaiting moderation. My colleagues (teachers) have also showed their support and left comments (which are also awaiting moderation). I have also emailed the Huff Post to see what can be done. My next move will be going to WordPress.

These people stole my happy feelings from being published and they also stole my words, my thoughts.

These were  my original posts. My name is clearly mentioned at the top of the articles. The Huff Post is great with the attributions.Other people aren’t:

My ‘problem’ with the word disability

Today was the first time I filled in a job application and ticked a box about a disability.

There was a question about whether I have a condition that may affect my work and I finally ticked the box. It took me 40 years. I ticked the box and then filled in another box with details. I wrote:

I am colourblind and I may have difficulty if things are colour coordinated.

That’s the truth. I have actually had difficulty at work in the past. It has been a ‘problem’. Some colleagues have helped me. Others immediately, others after a bit, and I have been brushed off, cause, well, she didn’t have the time.

I find it very difficult to do that especially when it comes to work cause I am an Alpha type gal who sets goals and tries to do anything. I have told myself over and over again that my disability is something that enables me to do so many other things. It challenges me, it makes me resourceful, stronger, but does it? Why do i find it so hard to accept the term disability?

Let’s look at the definition of disability,

an illness, injury, or condition that makes it difficult for someone to do the things that other people do

My vision is quite bad, not just cause of colourblindness. I went to the eye doctor and she mentioned that I was entitled to a phone with bigger numbers and loads of other stuff at work. I laughed. Me? Do I need special treatment? No. I ain’t gonna have it.No way.

It’s actually people like me, who have a disability and cannot come to terms with it,  who make it difficult for the rest of those like me. I have written a zillion posts where I whined about my colourblind life. I have written even more about what I want to change, but when I get the opportunity for a change that would’ve made my life easier, I never took it. When it had to do with my work, I didn’t want special treatment. I was scared. I said nothing. It took me 40 freakin years to tick the box!

Why?

Is it because I have grown up in Greece and even from the ancient years, children with defects were chucked off mountains (Sparta)?I learnt this at school as part of history.

Is it cause I feel bad about myself? Not normal? Weak? Weaker than others?

Is it because of my personality. I am a tough cookie. I can deal with it. It ain’t a big deal.

Is it because I feel embarrassed or scared that someone will make fun of me?

This has actually happened. The number one question I get is, ” What do you think this colour is?” Recently a makeup artist was layering my lips with a lipstick so many times, just so I could ‘see’ the colour. My students have told me that the marker I was using was a different colour just to giggle. I was so pissed off, and sad.

I am always asking for help.  Is it the same for other people? What’s wrong with me? I feel so comfortable talking about colourblindness, but I could never tick the box………

 Today I did.
