Plan with me: 4th-10th April

Hi lovelies!

Another plan with me post this week. Haven’t done one for ages cause I wasn’t really feeling it. Anyhow, today I am feeling inspired and I am using printables from the Story planner 2016 (#justjaimee) which is sold at the Lilypad. You get a dashboard, a monthly spread (small boxes), loads of stickers for your weekly spreads, clip art, half boxes and checklists etc.

❤ My spread

I like the spread because it is colourful and looks as if spring is going to jump out of the pages. So, here is my weekly spread.

Bri.jpg

It is quite minimal because I do not know my work schedule yet. I am planning a trip to the UK, so some of my check list stuff is on this spread.

So, there you have it. This week’s spread.

*The pens in the pictures are from Amazon and you can get them here.

7 questions you NEED to ask before pulling the plug on your business

A while back I wrote a blog post about a professional failure.I had a business which I had to shut down after 7 years (language school). Today, I am going to share with you the questions I asked myself and helped me pull the plug on my business. Letting go is not easy. If you own a business and are torn between whether you should keep on going or whether you should just turn a new leaf, then this post will help give you a better perspective. I have been there, done that, and am fine.

So, let’s talk about the questions you need to ask yourself if you have a sinking boat as a business.

Soul Searching

Why?

Why is my business failing? Why am I thinking of closing down? Is there something I can try? What?

Feelings

How does my business make me feel? Why do I have it? When I work do I feel happy and productive or do I feel a weight on my chest? Do I feel depressed because things are not going the way I want them to?

My answer: When I first started my business, I was on cloud nine. Money was not a problem. The fact that I wasn’t making much was OK. I had my business. After a while though and as debts kept piling up, I thought to myself, ” What else can I do?” I have tried everything I can possibly think of (and afford). Going to work felt like a burden. I was giving my heart and soul to work. I was trying to be the best teacher ever, but the number of students was not enough. I started hating my job. Hating going to work. I started to feel undervalue and sorry for myself.

Why do I keep going?

Give reasons as to why you still have the business. Write down the reasons.

My answer:

Untitled

Timeline

How long can I take it (moneywise and emotionally)? Does my business feel like a burden or not? When will I shut down? Why then?

My answer: I stuck to my guns for 7 years. The first 5 were OK (-ish), the last 2 I felt miserable. I had one foot out of the door. It was a burden.

Let’s Get Practical

Money questions

How much am I really making from this business? Is this money enough to keep my business afloat or will I need to take a loan, use more of my personal savings to keep it running? If I decide to take a loan:

  • who will lend me the money?
  • how much do I need?
  • how will I pay back?
  • when will I pay back?

My answers: I was making money to cover my winter expenses, but every summer my language school was shut and that meant I had no income. Then the tax laws in Greece became even stricter and the bills just kept piling up. I had to do a different job in the summer, to make ends meet.

Possessions

If I close down, what will I do with everything I have bought for my business? Am I going to put things on sale? Where/how? Will I be able to store things?

My answer: When I shut down my business, I did not have a plan as to what I was going to do with all my school’s furniture. Two years later, I still have everything stored in an old building. All the desks and tables are just laying around. This is such a waste. Learn from my mistake.

The day after

Thinking about the future: If I do shut down my business, what am I going to do? What’s my plan B? If I don’t have a plan B, maybe I need to start thinking of plan B.

Plan B thoughts

Look at job ads (can I apply to anything?)

Do I have transferable skills? How can I use them for something else? Think of your skills/talents/certificates: how can you use them when job hunting?

Do I need to go back to school? (Yes?  What?)

Do I start telling people I am looking for a new job?

My answer regarding skills/qualifications: I am a teacher and I teach English. I also like writing. I started blogging. I like arts and crafts. I started making paperclips (someone asked me if I would be willing to sell them. Would I?). My degree made me look for other degrees/certificates that would help me become more qualified. I looked into teaching qualifications. I already had a BA in English language and linguistics. I also had an MA in Teaching English as a second language.I had to look at other things I could do cause I knew I still wanted to teach.  I got a diploma called the Cambridge Delta. With that I can now teach anywhere in the world. It has also opened the door to teaching at UK universities in the UK (that’s what I do now).

Some final thoughts

Knowing when to let go is really hard because you make a financial investment as well as an emotional one. Failing at something is not easy either. My advice is that if you are in my shoes, take a big breath and really think. If this is not making me happy anymore, then it needs to stop.

Let go………

All the questions I have posed are on this 4 page Pdf file, which you can print, think about and make notes on.

What are you doing today? How about making a time capsule?

Hi mummies!

I am not a mommy blogger, but I did post a blog post about something similar on my edu blog and thought I’d pop onto here for a very quick post.

Today is February 29th and I thought it would be a cool idea to make a time capsule with your kids. You could even make it a whole family time capsule.

What do you need?

A box (you can use a cardboard box and decorate it with your kids. They can draw on it, stick scrapbook paper or anything they like.)

A smile

The process

Tell whoever in the family you want to be involved, to put things in a box (your time capsule) and that you will open it on February 29, 2020. They can find newspaper clippings, they can make lists of popular songs/ games/ movies (maybe even a usb stick if your kids are really high tech), chocolate rappings.  Anything! You make the family time capsule and it is stored somewhere in the house till 2020.

It would be a nice idea to video tape the whole process or take pics and keep them in the box as well!!

capsule

So, that’s all folks.

Eisenhower Matrix: plan with me

Today I did something a bit different in my planner. I used one page for my work schedule and another page for my To DOs. I used the Eisenhower matrix which is a matrix that makes you think about what you want to do but prioritise. So, you have to decide what’s important and urgent, urgent but not important and so on.  It helps you be more productive and this week I am giving it a shot. You can try this type of planning method by printing my printables. Please do subscribe to my blog if you liked what you read. It does help me out a lot (look at the sidebar on ways to follow ). So, may the planning begin ❤ ❤ .

Book Review: The Decision Book

Today’s book review is of the Decision book: fifty models for strategic thinking by Mikael Krogerus and Roman Tschappeler. This is a European bestseller which presents the fifty best decision-making models. These models are popular models taught on MBA courses. What I love about these models is that they are presented in this book in such a way that can be understood by anyone.

BOOK

What models are presented?

Well as I said earlier, there are fifty models for strategic thinking and they are in the following categories:

How to improve yourself

How to understand yourself better

How to understand others better

How to improve others

The Book’s layout

A brief and easy to understand explanation of each model is on one page and a table/graph/ grid is on the other page. So each model is 2 pages long. At the end of the book there are templates/pages for you, the reader to practice these models!

What do the writers say?

According to the writers, you should read this book if you have to deal with people daily. It will help you with questions you are always confronted with.

How do I make the right decision? How can I motivate myself or my team? How can I change things? How can I work more efficently? And on a more personal level: What do my friends reveal about me? Do i live in the here and now? What do I want?

Krogerus and Tschappeler  (p. 5: 2011)

Looking at one of the models I liked

One of the models I love and am sharing with you today is the Eisenhower Matrix. Eisenhower is claimed to have said, ” the most urget decisions are rarely the most important ones.” Whatever job you have to do, you should look at the Eisenhower matrix and decide on what to do first. Most often people do the things that are important and urgent. What about the things that are important, but not urgent (Krogerus and Tschappelerp.10:2011)?  The latter actually have to do with long term decisions. How do you prioritise? This matrix helps you with prioritising and visualising your tasks.

*If you are interested in purchasing the book, you can find it here.

Little extras

I am also sharing with you a table I made that is based on this model. You can print it and write down all the things you have to do based on their ‘urgency’. Of course, there will be two versions: a ‘girlie’ one (with polka dots ❤ that works great in your planner) and a plain version (two pages: one for brainstorming and the other one for planning your goals) which you can stick to your notice board/ on your wall.

Final thoughts

It all comes down to one thing folks. I really enjoyed reading this book. It got me thinking about what I want to get done. It is so easy to read and I finished it in one day!

Let me know what you think of this post. Do you like it? Do you want to see more models? Also, tell me about how you set goals.

FREE Printables & Plan with me

Hi lovelies!

I am really excited about today’s printable cause Jennifer designed it especially for my readers 🙂 ❤ <3. I asked her to make a gray and white spread, something with no colours because I had in mind that I wanted to make two spreads that were aiming to raise colourblind awareness.

I am colour blind and while I love decorative planning, it is so hard to match colours, especially when I am sharing my ‘plan with me’ posts with you guys.

Colourblind Info

1/12 males and 1/200 females are colourblind. The most common type is red/green colourblindness. This does not mean that CB people confuse their reds/greens. It actually means that they confuse reds, greens, shades of these colours, and any other colour that is formed with these colours (that’s a lot of colours folks). Being colourblind ain’t easy, especially if you think of everything, you, a normal vision person can do, and I, a colour blind person cannot. From the simplest, choosing a banana that is not green to crossing the road. That’s why on my blog, my platform, I try to tell my story, and try to be heard cause awareness will make my life easier.

This week’s spread

I used the printables from GabisPlannerPrints and the Washi tape is from PetitePinkBoutique (she has some really nice stuff ❤ ). I like writing down my work schedule and bits and bobs I want to get done this week. I add stuff throughout the week, so my planning is an ongoing process.

15 ideas for DIY planner covers, dividers & dashboards

Hi loves,

Today I am going to talk to you about covers, dashboards and dividers. I will share with you some ideas on how to make your own dividers/covers and what to put on them. Here is a disclaimer: while I have loads of ideas, I am a bit clumsy with my execution :). So, what do you need to make your DIY covers/dashboards and dividers? A cup of coffee and creativity. A laminator would be useful as well :D.

Anyhow, enough with the babbling. Here are some ideas:

🌼 A drawing

My 3-year-old niece drew a drawing and I laminated it. I get to keep something so cute and precious ❤ ❤ .

zwgrafia.jpg

🌼 Lined paper

I laminated some lined paper. I can now write on it, then erase whatever I wrote, and use it for something else later on.

Lined.jpg

🌼 A quote

I found a quote/image I liked and laminated it.

quote.jpg

🌼 Ribbons

This ribbon looks so pretty and girlie. It was from my niece’s christening and now I have it in my planner 🙂 . Now be a bit careful cause I am not sure everyone can do this without setting a fire or destroying their laminator. Mine worked fine. Nothing happened.

ribbons

🌼 Digital paper

There are lots of patterns on Etsy which you can buy and then laminate and use as a divider. This one was shared on my blog a while back (so if you like it check out aestheticaddiction’s interview in the planning category in the sidebar). Alternatively, you can use scrapbook paper or even a plastic bag you liked (this idea was shared in one of the Facebook groups I am a member of, so cannot take credit for it).

digital paper.jpg

🌼 3D laminated paper

I used 3D stickers that are intended for wall decorations and made a 3D cover!

wall paper.jpg

🌼 Sticky notes

I laminated Notes and To Do sticky notes. I can use these many times for notes that can move around in my planner. I would use this for more general Notes/to DOs.

sticky

🌼 Flowers

I laminated plastic flowers (yes, the ones you have in a vase). Now be a bit careful cause I am not sure every one can do this without setting a fire or destroying their laminator. Mine worked fine. Nothing happened.

flower.jpg

🌼 A photo

This is a photo of me and my cousins when we were young. This is going in my colour crush!

photo.jpg

🌼 Other ideas?

Well, you can laminate:

💐 Your wedding vows/a love letter

💐 Your wedding invitation

💐 Your baby’s foot prints

💐 A card

💐 A ticket from a concert you went to

Anything you want to remember and puts a smile on your face.

Giveaway & Plan with me: The unicorn spread

CLOSED

Today’s plan with me post is a bit different. I am sharing with you my unicorn spread. There is a story behind this spread and it has to do with my colourblindness. There is also a giveaway. I will be giving away 5 unicorn sticker sheets. Details below.

Big version PIn

First though, I want to give you some background information. I am partially colour blind. Being colourblind and seeing black and white is extremely rare. Most people are red/green colourblind and more rarely blue. That means that we cannot see red/green/blue (depending on the type of CB) and all the colours that are shades or made with these colours. So, I, for example, have difficulty with red and that makes it hard for me to see purple, pink, orange, brown etc. 1/12 men and 1/200 females are colourblind. According to colourblind awareness org., there is one student in every classroom.

So, what does that have to do with you or unicorns & planning Joanna?

Well, I ❤ decorative planning, but I never know if what I am using matches. When I get washi tape for example, I have no idea what colour it is. The cashier helps me. I label my pens, so I know what I am using OR I buy pens that have the name of the colour on them! That is something random that I cannot do. Colour coordinating is completely out of the question for me! You are so lucky, you get to appreciate what you make. You know what it looks like. I don’t. Yes, I appreciate it, yes I think it’s pretty, but I don’t really ‘see’ it.

And using colourful pens or stickers is just a small thing I cannot do. Think about your life, your colours.

So, why unicorns?

Many talk about unicorns as if they exist, but they don’t or do they? That’s quite like the way people treat us. We are talked about but no-one (well the majority) doesn’t ‘see’ us, just like unicorns <3. The funny thing is that when I say, ” Oh! I am colour blind” I have heard, as a response, ” Oh! You are like a unicorn” Hence, the unicorn spread idea. I have written so many posts about my struggles, and if you do have time, please check this one out because I am really trying to raise awareness and you will also get a clear idea of what I cannot do, and maybe even help out the next person who asks for help cause they cannot see colours. I am just trying to raise awareness, and I need your help lovelies.

Big version

Plan with me <3. Make your unicorn spread ❤ ❤

I covered my pages with two white sheets (yeah I know, I should have stuck them better). I used lace washi tape and pearl stickers. I think I am more of a functional, scrapbooking type of planner. I like white space cause too many colours confuse me. I wrote down my work schedule. My income this week ( I work for a company and teach English one to one). I wrote down some twitter chats I would like to take part in (cause I am a blogger) and I also wrote down some things I want to do on the weekend.

close up

What did I use?

Unicorn stickers from Michelle and Patch.

Lace washi tape  from my Crafty Nell (blue butterfly/pink flower)

Lace washi tape from Craft mum 80  (bigger pink washiwith flower)

This unicorn sticker

One of my favourite Etsy store owners, Michelle from Michelle and Patch, was actually designing a unicorn sticker when I told her that I wanted to make a spread and gave her all the details. She designed the unicorn and sent me 4 to giveaway to you guys (How kind? Thanks Michelle ❤ <3). I added one, so we have 5 unicorn sheets. In her listing she has added a small dedication to us cb people.
