“See” my makeup bag

I should have said,

Walk in my shoes

But I have already used that as a title.

This is a very, very quick post about something that happened today and pissed me off once again. I am colorblind and visually challenged (impaired if you prefer). I ❤ makeup and I buy a lot of it. I wear it, review it, blog about it, and that takes a lot of time. It is very challenging for me and sometimes I feel like a joke cause I am like,

c’mon woman, you cannot even see the colour of the product you are talking about.

Anyways, I bought a few nyx products when I was in the UK and started taking pics because they are going to be part of the one year blog anniversary giveaway. I started laying out the products  for the giveaway. I was happy. I like doing giveaways.

Colourblindess and makeup.jpg

As I lay out my goodies, I see that I am able to describe the products because I can see the names of the lippies, for example (of course I will be looking up other reviews to get exact colour descriptions). BUT there is one product I have no idea how to describe because I cannot read the name of it.The colour name on the pencil clashes with the colour of the pencil, so I cannot read nada.

thumbnail_img_20160920_1152061

This just looks like a big blob. A blob that makes me angry.

So, welcome to my makeup bag

where cosmetic companies prefer to give random names, where colours clash, and where a disability makes you incompetent.

Thanks. It goes beyond a challenge. You just cannot do something. Period. No ramp, no special facilities. Nothing. Yeah, sure, my life could be worse. There are worse conditions out there, but this is my life, and my worse.

Today it’s NYX, yesterday it was Rimmel, L’oreal, Burberry, Chanel, Dior, Lancome, Clinique, TooFaced, Makeup Geek, Maybelline. It’s all of them.

Highend and highstreet making me feel low.

I am pissed off.

What do I want? I want one brand to say,

Hey Joanna, what can we do?

One brand.

Oh yeah… and I am one customer. A blogger with only 3k followers on my social media platforms. If I had 500k, I’d probably have a makeup line collab. A “colourblind friendly one”…. just saying……

This is just a glimpse. Just one thing. One simple thing. It’s just makeup. Let’s not go into ‘bigger stuff’….. or shall we? Check out the colourblindness awareness org page (see sidebar) to get informed if you are interested. 1/12 males and 1/200 females are colour blind. 1 student in every classroom, just so you know.

Rant over.

Talk later.

Joanna

A few hours later: my sister came over and told me it is called brown perfection. Also, a lovely blogger friend googled the bar code and told me the same thing. The giveaway is now live and can be found here.

It shouldn’t have been so hard though……

I am now making YouTube videos, so do check out my channel if you have time ❤ ❤

Fall Jewelry Trends I Like & Others I Love to Hate

Do you like jewelry? I do. Earrings and necklaces in particular. I flipped through magazines, read articles online and did a bit of accessory shopping. Today I will share the trends I love and those I love to hate….

Fall Jewelry Trends.jpg

1 Long Earring, 1 Short Earring

So I bought the weirdest, the most random pair of earrings from Oasis. When I wore them together I didn’t like them and since I knew the one short, one long earring was a trend, I tried it and hmmm…. dunno folks.

thumbnail_img_20160917_1003541

I am kinda on the fence on this one, maybe cause these earrings are so out there that I am starting to dislike them. I wore one long and a stud. I may try a more subtle pairing and give this trend one more shot.

thumbnail_20160917_1747201

Pearls

I ❤ pearls. They are elegant, chic, sophisticated, and can tranform any outfit. They are in this season, and I already have a small collection of expensive pearl necklaces, earrings and bracelets.

thumbnail_20160910_220641_12

My Golay pearl necklace

I also bought a pair of earrings that look really interesting. I got them from M & S. Nice, huh? Do invest in pearls though……..

thumbnail_20160917_1746382

A circle on a Neclace

Circles hanging from a chain neclace are also something I noticed on social media and in stores, so I got this necklace when I was in Topshop. In hindsight, I think I would have liked a smaller circle.

thumbnail_img_20160913_2054091

Chokers

While I like the trend and wore chokers when I was in my teens, I am a bit self concious about my neck, so I thought I’d dip my toe in this trend and bought a small choker from River Island. We will see how this goes ladies. I may cave and also get a velvet-y one from Zara.

thumbnail_20160917_1748011

Brooches

Oh!! So, so gorgeous. Got a hair brooch from Topshop can’t wait to put it on my hair when I go somewhere more dressier. You can also wear them as pins on clothes. I prefer hair brooches though.

thumbnail_20160917_182134-11

My picks

I had a quick look on Amazon and found some pieces I like and think are similar to some of the jewelry shown in this post (his part contains amazon affiliate links).

The necklace with the circle

Smaller circle and a bit more delicate.

circle-necklace-rose-gold

Chokers Black Velvet Ribbon

As I said, I think I will try a plain velvet one.

choker

Pearl Earrings

I liked these although I do suggest gettingreal elegant pearls.

Hair Brooch

Not a hair Brooch, but a hair comb. Pretty.

How I made $52 & got 2 Free Books & Stationery after 1 Year of Blogging

Catchy title, huh? borderline sarcy I would say. So lovelies, today’s post is about my blog’s wins. A success story. Or is it? Well, that depends on if you are a glass half full, half empty person. Anyways, every day on Pinterest and other social media, you read posts about

how I made $1000, $10.000, a billion, a zillion dollars after a month, ten minutes  or a second of blogging….

AND How you can do the same……

Well, that ain’t my case. I have been an educational blogger for almost 4 years and a ‘beauty/lifestyle’ blogger for one year. Yeap. I enjoyed blogging so much that I had to have 2 blogs.

Untitledmonetising from your blog.jpg

So have you made it?

Well, first of all, define ‘made it’. Secondly, how does one measure ‘made it’? From my blog’s title, you do realise that I have made ‘something’. So, full disclosure.

Moneywise: $52 from Amazon and sponsored posts

Productwise: 2 books, Planner stickers, Stationery, Free makeup samples (but not more than let’s say 10 products).

I have also expanded my affiliate branding.

A BIG beauty brand will be featuring my blog post in their newsletter (I will boast more about that when it actually happens. I tend to jinx myself so 😡 :x).

Almost 24.000 page views and 200 blog followers (people actually reading and following are the biggest win!).

So, let’s be a glass half full kind of person. Let’s not treat my “blogging” like it’s a joke cause it hasn’t made money.  Let’s treat it like a hobby and maybe a bit more………

You see, I was/ am a wannabe writer, but because I do not have: the eneergy, braincell power, money to get an agent ( I am a teacher. Teachers are underpaid), an actual book idea, I blog. Prolifically. I actually wrote my first book when I was 9 and it was about a girl who had a freind who was a robot. Then the robot’s head fell off and she fixed him. I know. Weird!

When I write/ blog, I feel good (just like the song says). That feeling  cannot be monetised because I get to write 500 word articles about anything and everything.I get to talk about makeup which I love, travelling, books and other random thoughts that pop into this (my) 40 year-old head. I have fun.

And if you are making a ton of money and rolling your eyes thinking that I am naive or that after a year of blogging , I should have more to show for myself, I reply,

Maybe you are right

Would I like my hobby to give me more opportunities? Sure.

BUT

I am content with what’s happened so far. I mean, com’on. A colour blind beauty blogger? Mind boggling to say the least.

So, yeah, if you are like me, just stay calm and keep blogging (originality….. I know).

How are you doing? Feel free to leave a comment in the section below. If you enjoyed what you read, do subscribe to my blog. We can also connect on social media. Click on the ones you use and connect with me 🙂  Pinterest / Twitter/ Instagram/Google+./YouTube

Laura Mercier Eye makeup tutorial

Hi everyone,

I am not the best eye makeup “putter”. You see, I am heavy handed, I have bad eye sight and I don’t really apply that much eye makeup, thus not that experienced. So, when Alex, the Laura Mercier makeup artist at the Laura Mercier counter in John Lewis Sheffield, asked,

Would you like to have an eye makeup tutorial?

of course, I said,

Yes!

Alex also asked me if I wanted an evening eye makeup look or an everyday one. I chose the latter because, well, I think I have less chances to mess up something that is not too too ‘hard’. As Alex had already done a flawless makeup tutorial for me, I was really excited to see what else she was going to help me out with.

laura-mercier-eye-look-tutorial

The Eye Look

Alex started with the Laura Mercier Eye basics Primer in Flax. She then applied the Caviar stick shadow in Copper. Alex said that I shouldn’t cover my lid with it but go close (-ish) to the crease and then use my brush to lift it upwards. She used powder in my crease and the colour was Truffle. The gel liner was Espresso and she blended the eye liner with the powder she used in my crease (Truffle), so it is a bit softer. The Mascara used was the Long Lash mascara and for my brows she used the Brow definer Gel in Soft.

thumbnail_20160824_171649-1.jpg

On my lips I am wearing Laura Mercier Lip Cream In Coral Reef ( I love it!! I wear it all the time!!).

 What did I get?

I got the

Laura Mercier Eye PrimerCaviar stick Eye Colour  in  Copper

Brow definer in Soft.

Alex had also done a flawless makeup tutorial which can be found here. If you are in Sheffield, do check out the Laura Mercier counter cause everyone there is very friendly and helpful. If you are anywhere else, check out the Laura Mercier counter anyway!

No7 Lipstick Skin Tone Matching?!?!

I ❤ lipstick. I have loads. I am also colourblind, so trying to find the right lipstick for me often involves either going shopping with my friend or over-relying on the kind hearted beautician at the X beauty counter. Rarely are lipsticks given proper names. Names which correspond to the actual colour of the lipstick which is why, today I am going to share with you a pleasant surprise. A brand that made my shopping easier cause it went a bit techy. What am I talking about? The No7 skin tone lipstick colour matching.I had seen the ad online.

Go to the No7 counter in Boots and get colour matched depending on your skin colour.

So, I did. I went to Boots and went to the No7 contour and asked Abby, the No7 beautician, to tell me about this service. She showed me a fancy device, took off a bit of my makeup in order to uncover my skin, placed the device on my skin and told me that my skin tone was warm ivory. She then showed me a card that showed what lippies go with warm Ivory.

Number 7.jpg

The best part was that the lippies were categorised based on their colour, so while I did not know what flame was, it was in the Orange table and with the help of Abby i decided to go for it. I also saw other colours that were suggestions and managed to walk out with 3 new lipsticks (yeah, cause I really needed persuasion). The interesting thing is that I liked the way they looked on me, so I guess this works!!!

Product review

Packaging: fine. Nothing fancy, nothing flimsy.
Price:9.95.But if you buy 2 you get a free goodie box that contains a primer, an eye shadow and a mascara. Coolest part? You get a 3rd lipstick as well.I also used my £3 OFF voucher and ended up paying about £16 pounds for 3 lipsticks and the goodies.
thumbnail_20160819_140307.jpg
Actual product: What I really really like about this lipstick is the actual top of the lipstick. The top part goes up a bit high and it sits perfectly on your lips. It makes applying so much easier. Really impressed (sorry I don’t know the ‘appropriate language for the lipstick parts, but do look at the pic to see what I mean).
Duration: Quite long lasting if you only drink something. If you start eating stuff, it needs to be reapplied. It feels comfortable on the lips, quite nourishing.
What did I get/swatches?
I Berry Blush (top), Flame (coral) in the middle, and Pink Blush (bottom).
No7 Swatches.jpg
I love this service and I am very happy with my purchase. If you are a lipstick hoarder like me, you should definitely check this out. You should also give it a shot, if you are colourblind like me. I am so so happy I got to try the skin top/ lipstick matching service at Boots and you know me, I will probably go in and get more lippies I do not need, but hey, my money, my lippes.

What a 10 hour makeup look REALLY looks like

I thought I’d write a post about what makeup I use when I am out and about and how it last for me. It is interesting to see what stays and what vanishes. Do you like subtle makeup looks where flawless skin in key and not too much going on is also essential? Then keep on reading.

A few disclaimers:

  • None of the photos of my face have had any editing done. They are they way my Samsung A3 phone took them.
  • I am 40 years old but I am quite lucky to have good skin with no real problematic areas.
  • I was out from 3:00 till 11 p.m.

During the Day: Picture Taken in River Island where the lights are really nice

Prepping and priming.

I use my Vichy Liftactiv Supreme Face cream and Eye Serum. I let that set and then use my Dior Forever and Ever. I then used the Maybelline Anti Age The Eye Eraser Concealer.

Face

Foundation: L’oreal 24 Hr Matte in the shade Vanilla.

Contoured with my TooFaced Cocoa Contour Palette.

Blush: Mac Fleur Power.

Highlighter: Revolution Vivid Baked Highlighter in the shade Golden light.

Bronzer: Matte Radiance Based Baked Powder Laura Mercier.

Powder on top: Chanel Les Beiges Healthy Glow Sheer Powder.

I used: My fingers to apply the foundation and a beauty blender for the concealer. I always set my foundation with a stippling brush though. I used a big fluffy Sephora Pro Powder Brush for  setting the powder and a Sephora contouring brush set (limited edition with a silver handle. Don’t know the name).

Lasting power

I was out all day, in the rain going in and out of stores from cold to warm. It held up quite well although before going out I did touch up and used my Bronze Goddess Multi Purpose Palette, so the evening photo is after adding a bit of blush and bronzer from that palette. I did not have any powder or foundation/ concealer on me, so, the base lasted all day long. So did the mascara. I did have to re apply the lip cream.

thumbnail_20160827_205759_1-1

At night time. Added the bronze Goddess Blush and bronzer.

So, there you have it. My REAL makeup look after being out and about all day long.

Ride or Die Tag

Of course I am a makeup junkie and I do spend loads of money(s) on makeup and pretty stuff. So, today when I was catching up on my YouTube videos I noticed that a lot of the channels I had subscribed to had Ride Or Die on their Thumbnails. After watching Jaclyn’s video (the one who started this tag) and a few of my other favourite YouTubers, the blogger in me decided to revolt and …….

OMG I am going to break all the bloggersphere laws and publish a second blog post in one day? Oh yes, I am! And Oh yes, I did.

So the #rideordie tag is what products would you take with you on a desert island. I have cheated a bit but eh, life is short and yeah, my post so I can cheat!!

First of all ladies, you are on a desert island and you don’t have the most important thing???!!!

Sun screen/ block

I would take a sun screen/ sun tan lotion on my dessert island! Of course!! Now I have been using this all summer and it is going down as my ride or die cause AT LAST I found a sun block that does not feel oily, greasy, yucky!!! What am I talking about? Super City Block by Clinique.

20160802_175532

Foundation

L’oreal  Infallible Mate 24H- Matte. I have been repurchasing this for so long. I really like the coverage and the non greasy feeling. My luxury going out foundation is of course Double Wear by Estee Lauder (cheating……).

20160626_112529-1

Powder

Chanel Les Beiges healthy glow sheer powder. I hit pan, bought a new one, and am hitting pan again.

Lipstick

For an  everyday lippie I think it’s Plum Pop by Clinique. Yeap. I love it. I love all my Clinique Pops.

1lip

Blush

Mac Fleur Power.

Hair Product

OK, so it’s not a makeup product but how ugly do you feel when your hair looks horrible and meh? Yeah. So, I have bought so many of these magical bottles, I have actually lost count. Diamond Shine all over Gloss  Spray by Charles Worthington. I love it. It makes my hair so shiny!!!

Perfume

OK, so I am going to cheat here (again) cause I have two choices. For going out I ❤ Chanel Mademoiselle (sophisticated classy smell). Now, for every day/ going to work summery perfume (and already on the second bottle), hands down it is the Escada Delicate Notes (it smells like a clean powder).

Mascara

Anything L’oreal.

Eye Shadow Pencils/ Crayons

The Clinique Chubby Sticks. I wear them every single day since I discovered them. They are so easy to apply and last all day long. I am really happy with them. My favourite one is the ample amber. Keep in mind that cause I am visually impaired these pencils have proven to be life savors!!

pencil

Contour Palette

Too Faced Cocoa Contour. I have been using this every day and I am hitting pan on both contouring shades. I do not really use the highlighter. I do use the banana powder though.

palette

Kinda Ride or Die

All summer I have been wearing the Bronze Goddess Multi Palette, so it should go here for a palette that is travel friendly and has a highlighter, a blush and a bronzer.

Palette

So these are my Ride Or die products. Do you agree with me on any of these? Feel free to leave yours in the comments below. I watched Tati, Kristina and the Jaclyn Hill who actually started the tag. You should check their videos out if you haven’t already.

Oh! Don’t forget to follow my blog ❤ ❤  Also, follow me somewhere/ somehow.

Laura Mercier makeup tutorial experience

I love getting my makeup done, don’t you? I also enjoy learning new things about how to apply makeup and get suggestions about brushes, sponges, techniques to apply makeup. When I heard the phrase,

Do you want a flawless makeup tutorial at the Laura Mercier contour?

Of course I jumped at the opportunity cause I do not have a Laura Mercier contour in my home town. The other reason was that the phrase flawless makeup is important to me. You see, if I am going to wear makeup, I want to look flawless. I am more on the medium to full coverage side of the spectrum than that of the light coverage.

Seriously gals, if you are going to wear makeup, it better cover, otherwise why bother?

laura Mercier haul

My beauty appointment

My appointment was on Saturday at 2 with Alex, the Laura Mericer makeup artist in John Lewis Sheffield. I sat down on a comfy chair and the tutorial started. Alex told me a few things about the person Laura Mercier.

She was a painter who went on to do makeup. She likes to use a canvas and people’s faces are the perfect canvas. She invented a primer in order to be able to have the perfect canvas to apply makeup on.

20160821_110135 (1)

After cleansing my skin, Alex applied the Flawless Skin Repair cream and Eye Serum. Both felt so nourishing and really comfortable on my face (they are on the To Buy list ladies).  She then used a hydrating primer and tested samples of foundation on my hand. I like mate finishes and I don’t like my foundation to feel oily , so I went for the Silk Cream oil free Photo Finish foundation. Alex used a beauty sponge/ blender. I told her that I like using a brush and then going over my foundation with a stippling brush. She said that sounded OK as well. She then applied the Laura Mercier Secret Concealer (No1) and secret camouflage (No2) with a brush. After that, the Laura Mercier Transluscent Powder.

Makeup

After the foundation had settled, it looked very natural and all my red spots/ rosacea was covered. She applied a bit of makeup as well, so she used the Matte Radiance Baked Powder in No2 (beautiful finish, nothing scary and perfect for people who are a bit more heavy handed….. like me). On the cheeks she used blush Heather Pink and as a highlighter the face illuminator in the shade Indiscretion ❤ <3. I like wearing bright lips, so we went for the lip cream in the shade Coral Reef (gorgeous).

I ended up buying

The Lip Cream: £22

The Foundation £35

The Baked Powder/ Bronzer £27

I also got the illuminator (bought this the previous day and don’t remember the price. It is 30+ though).

All in all, it was a lovely experience and Alex was very helpful. I have an eye makeup tutorial planned next, so stay tuned. If you are in Sheffield, you really should go to the Laura Mercier counter in John Lewis.

Correcting Skin Problems Using Lasers and Other Methods

If you want to treat a skin problem, the biggest question to ask is which treatment type should you pick? Are lasers the best option for you, or would you be better off using a different type of treatment method? The only way to answer that is by comparing treatment methods.

Using Some Type of Peel to Clear Up Your Skin

One option you have is to use some kind of peel to clear up your skin. There are several different types of peels or peel-like techniques that you can try. The most commonly thought of peel is probably the chemical peel, which involves applying a particular chemical mixture to the skin to help get rid of dead skin cells and other debris on the surface.

Another peel-like procedure is the laser peel. Professionals have used laser machines to remove the surface layers of their clients’ skin for years. The idea of the procedure is to let the fresh, healthy skin cells below show through and get rid of any dead cells or foreign bodies clogging the skin’s pores.

A third type of peel-like technique that can accomplish a similar goal in a different way is microdermabrasion. That uses a specialized tool to “sand” the surface layer of skin off, much like sanding a board to remove rough patches.

How Peel Techniques Differ from Each Other

Peel techniques are all done using different products and devices. Those differences also make some of them better or worse for certain people. For example, if you have dark skin then some types of lasers might not work well for you because they are better at treating lighter skin shades. Yet, other laser treatments might be perfectly fine. You just have to check with a skincare professional to find the right one.

There are no such good options for darker skinned people when it comes to chemical peels. The chemicals are universally bad for darker skin tones because they actually contain bleaching agents. That means that they can permanently, or at least semi-permanently, change the color of your skin, if your skin happens to be dark.

Other Skin Treatments That May be Worth Trying

There are also plenty of other skin treatments out there that may be worth trying. Among them are lotions, creams, intense pulsed light (IPL) therapy, and sound wave treatments like ultrasound or radio frequency procedures.

For the most part, all of those treatments are fairly safe, regardless of your skin tone. However, many of them are also weaker and less effective than lasers, chemical peels, and other treatments of that caliber. That means that you may require multiple treatments and a lot more time to achieve the same results that you might get from far few laser or chemical treatments.

Facelifts Are a Last Option

One final thing to remember is that, while facelift procedures have their place in the skincare world, they should always be the last option you try. One of the above methods or a similar method is likely to work for you with fewer risks and less recovery time. You just have to talk to your skincare expert to figure out which one is the right choice to treat your skin.

Virtual Consultation with Max Factor

Hi everyone,
A couple of weeks ago I got a tweet from Max Factor saying that I had won a virtual consultation with a Max Factor makeup artist. Yay. Today I am going to share with you what Mari Jelle (the Max Factor makeup artist) told me. Her top tips regarding contouring.

The Consultation

So Max Factor suggested some times for the Skype consultation and I chose to have mine during my lunch break. I had to find a quiet room which I did and waited for them to call me on Skype. The makeup artist, Marie, was so pleasant and smiley, so I immediately felt comfortable. She asked me what I’d like to learn about or talk about and of course I said,
” contouring”
She sat close to the camera and asked me a few questions about what products Iuse to contour and what brush. I told her (Toofaced Cocoa Contour Palette and a Sephora brush). She then showed me what other kinds of brushes I could use.
2016-07-31 03.12.01

Marie’s Top Tips.

  • Start from almost the top of your ear and stop close to your eye.
  • After contouring, add your blush.
  • When you blend your contour you should move your brush upwards. Always go up, not down.
  • When applying bronzer, start with your forehead and move to all the places where the sun would ” catch you”.
  • Highlighter goes above your cheek bones, nose, above your lip’s cupid bow and some on the chin (just a bit).
  • Blend everything carefully. If you do not blend you will be left with lines and we don not want lines. Uh-uh .
  • If you make mistakes, you can “correct” them by using your powder.
We spent about 25 minutes chatting. She also showed me some of the Max Factor products. It was a great experience and I am thankful for this opportunity to talk to someone who works at a brand’s headquarters.
I love contouring. I have seen a change in the way my makeup looks and am now a contouring addict.
So, that’s all for now. Don’t forget to subscribe (check my sidebar on how to do that) and connect with me on Pinterest / Twitter/ Instagram/Google+.
See you soon.
