Planner Chick Designs: Etsy Store Owner Interview

Hi Lovelies!

Another Etsy store owner interview today : D . Wendy from Planner Chick designs tells us about herself and her store. So, let’s see what Wendy told me.

My stickers

My purchase

Hi Wendy! Thanks for agreeing to this interview. Can you tell me a bit about yourself?
Hi Joanna!Well, I have been married for 27 years to my childhood best friend and I have four grown children, all of whom work for me in my Etsy shop. I also have 2 adorable grandchildren. I was a stay at home mom for 15 years before I went to work as a nail tech. I left that career to run my Etsy shop full-time.

 How and why did you start making stickers?
My husband and I have always been very entrepreneurial, opening and closing several businesses over the years; and my favorite part was always designing our logos, brochures, ads, etc. Everything to do with graphic design. And then when I discovered Erin Condren planners and the planner decorating world, I knew I had found my niche.
Excellent!! Can you tell me about what inspires you?
I’m inspired by small things. The beauty of nature, my grand baby reaching her arms out to me, breakfast on the porch on a beautiful morning. It’s an effort to always be present, but it’s a goal I strive to achieve.
Let’s talk a bit more about your store.What can someone find at your Etsy store? Do you have any favourite types of stickers?
I’ve always been a practical person, so my stickers are very functional, and I also offer a Sticker Book for compact storage of PCD stickers. My favorites are the monthly kits, because I just love everything to be color coordinated.
If you could turn back time to the day you opened your store, what advice would you give yourself? Any top tips?
I would tell myself, “You’re going to make mistakes. Just roll with it and do whatever it takes to make the customer happy.”

Now let’s move on to planning.
How do you plan?
I’m a plan-as-you-go type of person. 5 of the 6 people in my family have ADD, so we are very impulsive, so if I ever planned an entire week, it would be covered with “cancelled” stickers by the end of it! That being said, my goal is to one day plan a week in advance and actually complete it.

What the Greek recession has taught the shopaholic gal (me)

Most articles, blog posts that talk about Greece at the moment, talk about how bad everything is. And it is. Don’t get me wrong. People are suffering. I have suffered. I had a language school business which shut down partially due to recession. BUT I have also learnt a lot and changed my  money habits because of the situation. I had to say bye-bye to spendy Jo and hello to more careful (but still a bit spendy) Joanna.

So what has changed for the girl who needed/ wanted stuff, more stuff and a bit more stuff?

Credit cards

I stopped using them. Plastic money and Joanna do not go well. So, I cut mine up with scissors and am now just paying off my debts. If I don’t have the money, I shouldn’t be buying. Period.

Recycling

I love clothes, bags, makeup. The economy has made me dig deeper into my closet and pay more attention to what I have, what I need and what I want. Things on the want list usually just stay there. I love loads of things I see in the stores, but I cannot buy them, so I don’t. Instead I repurpose or start wearing again something I had bought a while ago, but just forgot existed. When I do shop, I try to avoid buying fashion trends (I opt for cheaper stores when it comes to those) and I usually by things that belong to a capsule kind of wardrobe.

Being a responsible citizen

I am paying more tax which means my income is much less cause a lot has to go to the government. In the past, when other people did not give me a receipt for a service (one way for the government to get money) I may have even ignored it. I wouldn’t care. Now, I ask for it (or at least most of the times I ask for it).

Sales/bargains

I take advantage of them. I look for bargains and shop during sales.

I have a piggy bank just to feel better

I like the sound of the coin when it drops into the piggy bank. I may not be able to save money in the bank, but I am saving coins (;P).

Bottom line is

Money is not the most important thing in the world

Yes, money matters but above all you need to think that if you are healthy and have a roof over your head, you will be OK.

Stressing over money

I have come to terms with the fact that I am not going to become rich nor am I going to have huge savings in the bank. I am more careful with how I spend my money. I make lists and write down my expenses. I always have a little budget for my fun little extras. Knowing what comes in and what goes out, makes it less stressful.

So, yeah, recession sucks, but you know what? I now value what I earn. I may still be in a spendy mode, but I am cautious. The shopaholic in me has become more mature.

To better times!

What did I get from H&M? Makeup, a knit and some bling

Last Friday was payday. Yeap, yeap. And Jo (that’s me) was a happy shopper. I had spent the previous evening catching up on my favourite YouTubers  who were talking about makeup and all that jazz, so I decided I’d go to H&M and see what all the fuss about the new makeup line was. I went to the H&M store in my town and started looking around. I did a bit of damage, but not tooooooo much. So what did I get?

Makeup

I got a couple of stuff. I bought two cream eye shadows; one is called Shy Violet (light purple) and the other one is called Countess (gold/brown-ish). I also got a blusher in the colour apricot and a lipstick called Fareham Brick (burgundy). All the colour descriptions are based on what other people say, cause I am colour blind and always need help when I am getting makeup, especially since makeup companies, H&M included, insist on giving makeup colours random names instead of calling it burgundy! Welcome to my world :(.

makeup with colour

Mini -review: The lipstick stays on for quite a while, but you do need to have it with you to reapply, especially if you eat or drink something. The eye creams don’t crease or budge. It actually took a while to take off.They do have a bit of fall out though. At least Countess does.  The blusher is kinda ‘weak’ . Don’t know how I feel about it yet.

Bling

I got two necklaces which I might even layer.

HM22

Blouse

I got a polka dot knit. It is nice and soft. The back is a bit longer than the front and there is also a little zipper in the back. It looks really nice.

20151104_090108

And because I like to be practical here are the tags of the Polka dot blouse and the two cream eye shadows. You can ask the people in H&M to  tell you where these items are (the 1st tag is for the knit. The other two are for the necklaces).

UntitleH&M Tags

I paid about 70 euros for everything. Knit was 20, necklaces around 12 and the rest was on the makeup.

Oh! Do follow/subscribe to my blog if you enjoyed this post. Give it a thumbs up (aka ‘like’) if you liked it. Let me know in the comments section below if you have tried the makeup or anything else I shared with you today. So, that’s all lovelies!! Happy shopping  ❤

What do you do?Ummmm, I am an online teacher :)

So, today I am going to talk to you about my job. I am a teacher, but a different kind of teacher. Huh? You may now ask, ” How many types of teachers are there?” Well, in today’s day and age there is something called an online teacher as well. So, that’s what I am. Half of my lessons ( I teach English as a foreign language) are online, hence an online teacher. Now you may ask, ” So, what on earth do you do Joanna? How do you teach?” When I teach online, I use the Internet of course. My virtual classroom is in Adobe connect (it’s a platform). There is a white board which is also the area where I can upload files and share the lesson material, a chat box section and an area for the web cam. I send a link to my student and s/he presses the link and comes to my ‘classroom’. Sometimes I  also use a land line or Skype when Adobe is acting out and the sound is all over the place.
So, after this brief but succinct description of my morning job, let’s move on to why I like my job. What are the perks of teaching online?  So, here goes!
Perk No.1
I have students from all over the world which is probably the thing I like most about online teaching! One minute I am in Stuttgart, the next Paris. I see how my students view things and how their educational background blends into my teaching practice and choice of techniques. The classroom is not my limit, my internet connection is!

Perk No.2
To all you weather freaks, at last a chance to talk about the weather with not one, but ALL my students. When teaching online, you get real life weather descriptions from all over the world. I often ask….. “So, how is the weather over there?” I always smile after asking this question, cause of course, my weather , here in Crete, is much better than theirs : P.

Perk No.3
It is green teaching (kinda…). Paper free to the core. I use no books, no handouts, nada. Just my computer screen.

Perk No.4
I save money on transportation, snacks and coffee. I am at home. I make everything myself. On the plus side, it literally takes me one minute to get to work : D.

Perk No.5
When my students are late, I do not have to sit around doing nothing. I go to my kitchen make some coffee,  tidy up my room….the lots!I can do whatever I want whilst waiting for the late comer.

Perk No.6
I get to wear my pyjama bottom. What else can a teacher ask for, people?

Perk No. 7
I am hip, a tech savvy teacher and it looks great on the CV. The kids love me cause I am a ‘cool’ teacher who uses technology.

Perk No. 8
You sound cool when you describe your job to other people. No one can get their head around using a computer to teach and everyone asks, ” So, what about a board?” ” Does you learner see you?”

Perk No. 9
Your time zone is NOT your limit. If you want to teach at 12 o’clock at night, you can. It is day time somewhere else in the world!

So, that’s my morning job. In the afternoon I teach face to face. This post was originally posted in my edu blog www.myeltrambles.com but has been adapted here.

Remember to follow my blog if you like what you read (check sidebar for info on how to follow). Feel free to leave a comment below. I mean would you consider having lessons online? Give this a thumbs up (aka like) if you enjoyed reading it ( you help me get a sense of what you guys like reading cause I am still trying to find me voice). Thanks for stopping by lovelies!

Plan with me: November 2nd-8th

Sunday morning is often time to plan, so here is this week’s spread. I am still trying to figure out how to plan in my Happy planner. I am also colour blind, so I have no idea if this week’s spread is colour co-ordintated, but doesn’t matter. I like it ❤

I have started writing down my work schedule cause I am an online teacher, so my lesson times change every week. I am also preparing for a teachers’ conference which is taking place in Barcelona next week, so I have put that in throughout my planner just to remind me that I have to plan my PowerPoint presentation.

The Spread

2nd to 7th

This spread has stickers mostly from Shabby Chick Crafts which is currently rebranding and will be called Spark Some Sunshine. The full boxes with the butterflies, the floral washi tape, the me time sticker are all from her shop.

The open book, the piggy bank and the little planner are from Michelle and Patch.

The dough nut and coffee mug (Sunday) are from Lilly Top.

The nail polish and the mug on Wednesday are from Planner Chick Designs.

The shopping hanger is from Hello Petite Paper.

The Scales and stethoscope are from the Sassy Planner.

The cocktail glass is from Shop Alissa Love.

I have interviewed Lilly Top and Shop Alissa Love who have given printables and coupon codes, so do check out those blog posts. I have also interviewed Jenny from Shabby Chick Crafts. Check out her interview here. There is also a Thanksgiving SALE valid till the 15th of November for purchases over $10 dollars. Coupon code is: turkey15.Visit her store Lillytop.net

10 things to do in Thessaloniki (Greece)

A few weeks ago I asked my Facebook friends if anyone would be interested in writing a blog post about things someone can do in their town. This is the 1st blog post in this new series. So, what would you do in your city? Here is Vicky, a fellow teacher from Thessaloniki. taking us around her town; Thessaloniki, Greece.

10 things to do in Thessaloniki

This is intended as an ‘alternative’ tourist guide of my city, because what I would like to share and suggest is places that I often visit and love rather than typical attractions of a city.

1

It is true that the city is largely known for its Byzantine history, so lots of opportunities to visit the many churches in the center of the city or to see the remains of the Byzantine walls

byzantine

@Vicky Papageorgiou

2

What I love though, and always take my friends/visitors to, is the old monastery (Moni Vlatadon) where St. Paul preached when he visited the city. It’s high up in the old city, on the left,  just before you cross the first arch gate. I like the peacefulness and the spirituality of the area. Especially in summer, full of trees as it is, you can enjoy the fresh air, coolness and the sound of the crickets. A panoramic view of the city only adds to its beauty.

@Vicky Papageorgiou

        @Vicky Papageorgiou

3

If you like walking, you can follow one of the narrow paths/cobbled streets from that place that will take you straight to the city centre.

Center

@Vicky Papageorgiou

4

Once you get there, and if you want to experience one of the last areas left nearly intact since the beginning of the century (not for long though…), this is the old fish and vegetable market. It has been a ‘fave’ for me ever since I was a child when my mother would go shopping every Saturday. Fish mongers invite you to smell the fresh fish (Hello, love! Let me feed you fresh sardines today. Come and see how fresh they are! –  shoving them to your face ! –and trying to tempt you even more – We will gut them for you! ). I just love them!

@VickyPapageorgiou

@VickyPapageorgiou

5

Small shops selling natural sponges, shops with a variety of spices you can never imagine (there is a particular one you can even find snake-skin and teeth – I swear!). You can find fresh fruit and vegetables but also salted fish next to a shop with clothes, cheap ones mainly, another on with souvenirs and then a shop with army clothes. It’s all there. Take your pick!

@Vicky Papageorgiou

   6

Cross the road and you are in the area of the old Baths. They are not open to the public but you can have a nice coffee and watch the people pass-by.

@Vicky Papageorgiou

 7

The city is full of thermal baths but is also full of mosques which are now used as museums or cultural venues. One of them is the Yeni Tzami. Even though it is a bit further off the centre, you should give it a try. Places like these remind you of the city’s once multicultural character.

@Vicky Papageorgiou

8

Not far away is the harbor and a stroll along the seafront is a must! You can enjoy your coffee and lunch at Kitchen Bar at the old Harbour and the (now renovated) warehouses. In the same area, there is the Photography Museum as well as one of the Bienalle Galleries.

Kitchen Bar

9

Enough with the city centre now! If you are an art lover, the State Museum of Contemporary Art, located in the West suburbs of the city, is a wonderful experience. It is housed in the renovated building of the old Convent of Les Lazaristes , which is an interesting location on its own. Now, the old cells host the paintings and/or the installations exhibited. A unique place indeed.

Art

@Vicky Papageorgiou

A few words (or more) for this particular collection and one of my favourite places in the city : The initial collection was formed by a large part of the famous Costakis Collection, acquired by the Greek state. It contains around 1,275 works of Russian avant-garde art consisting of paintings, sculptures, drawings and constructions. You can see one of the vastest collections of Russian Avant Guarde Art, with over a hundred works of art on display in the permanent exhibition, they are the pride of the collection and are by artists such as K. Malevich, V. Tatlin, V. Kandinsky, El. Lissitsky, L. Popova, O. Rozanova, N. Udaltsova, A. Rodchenko, S. Nikritin, etc. The story behind the collection is fascinating since the Greek collector whose collection became the most representative body of Modern Russian avant-garde art anywhere,  was no other than a chauffeur who worked for the diplomatic corps! More specifically, for the Canadian Embassy. Being in contact with many visiting diplomats whom he drove to antique shops and galleries ,and having a strong instinct for art, although with no formal education, made him develop not just an interest in art but a passion for it along with an open mind and a great ‘eye’.  He wanted to rediscover the Suprematist and Constructivist art, lost and forgotten in the attics, studios and basements of Moscow and Leningrad. Hunting for ‘lost’ pictures, he did not hesitate to visit relatives, warehouses, small cities, any place where he could find ‘his’ paintings for the collection. Do not miss it, if you can! It is a must!

Later in the evening, I am sure you would appreciate a nice stroll at the new seafront. Plenty of people there, enjoying the light breeze and the beautiful colours of the sea and the sky. Sometimes, there is a jazz band playing. No matter what, it’s a great closure for a busy day. I hope you can enjoy it!

An oldie but a goodie: 1984 book review/reminder

// So, we’ve all heard about big brother, some of us have probably even watched the reality show (don’t worry, I ain’t gonna tell), but how many of you have actually read the book that inspired this? What am I talking about? Well, George Orwell’s 1984.

I started reading this book as part of a book club session with my student. We wanted to read a book and talk about it. She chose 1984. When I first started reading it, I hated it. I could not get it.

The plot (in a nutshell): It’s about a man called Winston who lives in a land where everything is controlled. There is no freedom (except if you are a prole aka an outcast/rebel). He is scared and alone, but there is a glimpse of hope for him. Or is there?

As I said earlier, I wasn’t really ‘feeling’ the book. The language was hard, the pictures the writer was drawing were strange. I am a girlie girl and I just couldn’t get the book. But I had to read it cause it was part of my lesson with this learner. So, we started talking about Winston’s life and how depressing and gloomy the whole situation described in the book, seemed to be. I gave it time, and then when I reached chapter 4, I started enjoying it. I mean. I loved it. The language I hated in the beginning, was what I appreciated the most later on. Winston’s random thoughts and his ‘miserable’ early personality (he goes through phases) drew me in. Then came the girl and, yeap, I couldn’t stop reading it. The thing I loved the most was the invention of a whole new language. In the book, the characters have to use a new language which is totally stripped of emotions. My favourite bit is this one:

“It’s a beautiful thing, the destruction of words. Of course the great wastage is in the verbs and adjectives, but there are hundreds of nouns that can be got rid of as well. It isn’t only the synonyms; there are also the antonyms. After all, what justification is there for a word which is simply the opposite of some other word? A word contains its opposite in itself. Take “good”, for instance. If you have a word like “good”, what need is there for a word like “bad”? “Ungood” will do just as well-better, because it’s an exact opposite which the other is not.Or again, if you want a stronger version of “good”, what sense is there in having a whole string of vague useless words like “excellent” and “splendid” and all the rest of them? “Plusgood” covers the meaning, or “doublegood” if you want something stronger stills……….You don’t grasp the beauty of the destruction of words.”        Syme talking to Winston (George Orwell in his book 1984).

Com’on how beautiful is that excerpt? I strongly recommend reading the book. You can get it now (book or Kindle) by clicking this * Amazon link here.

20151029_183943_resized

This book brought out my dorky/ nerdiness. I loved it. You should get it. Give it time though……. I know this is not your typical book review, and I am not going to give you details about the plot. I don’t want to take anything away from it and your reactions to this book. I am sharing it here today cause it is a book everyone should read at some point in their life. I wanted to share with you my experience of reading 1984.

Product Review: The Body Shop’s Tea Tree facial wash

Today I will be reviewing the Body shop’s Tea Tree facial wash.

According to the Body Shop website, this facial wash:

  • removes oil without making the skin too dry
  • helps give a healthy-looking skill

tea tree

What’s my Response to that?

It does remove excess oil and it is not drying (this comes from someone who has a sensitive skin). I cannot say if it makes my skin look healthier or not because I have good skin anyways.

My Opinion

Texture

After you shake the bottle for a bit and press the little pump, the product comes out in a foam form which is very light. It’s not a greasy foam. It feels more like bubbles than anything else.

Scent

It smells like an antibacterial cleanser, like you are at the dentist’s.

How does it feel?

When you wash your face with it, you do feel woken up and clean. I often use this when I have had a rough night and water is not enough to wake me up! It also makes your skin feel cleaner and breathing!If yur skin feels a bit oily, this reduces that feeling.

What does it do to my skin?

I have sensitive/combination skin with a tendency to dry. This is not an exfoliating product, so I do use it quite often. It does deter zits and spots, but I wouldn’t say it is a pharmaceutical product that treats acne or anything like that.

Will I repurchase?

I am on my second bottle (it is long-lasting), so, yes.

*If you are in the mood for shopping get it from Amazon by clicking here.

So, that’s all for now. Happy facial cleansing lovelies.

Featuring Shop Alissa Love: Etsy store owner interview

Good morning lovelies, today is Saturday and I thought I’d share with you another Etsy store feature. Today I am talking to lovely Alissa from Shop Alissa Love. We get to know Alissa a bit better and she is very kind and shares with us a coupon code for 25% off from her stickers (thanks Alissa <3). So, time to chat with Alissa.

Hi Alissa!! Thanks for agreeing to an interview! Can we start by you telling me a bit about yourself?
I’m from Santa Monica, California. I studied art and design in college and for fun I try to grow my own orchids. I don’t really have a green thumb, but I try anyway! 🙂

How and why did you start making stickers?
I started noticing people in the planning community using stickers and planners to help make organizing tedious daily tasks fun. I wanted to join the fun so invested in sticker making supplies and haven’t looked back since! I use a canon pixma printer and silhouette cutting machine. I am happy to share my tips and techniques if anyone is interested!

What inspires you?
I am inspired by sparkly pink anything and rhinestones. I put magenta rhinestones all over my iPod in high school.

Alissa's Planner

Alissa’s Planner

What can someone find at your Etsy store?
My store carries lots of functional planner stickers as well as unicorns, flamingos, and gummy bears sprinkled around for a memorable and unique touch.

If you could turn back time to the day you opened your store, what advice would you give yourself? Any top tips?
Make BIG lists of ideas and inspiration! I keep a list in my planner and add to it whenever I think of new designs. Also, if you have a website link it to your Etsy shop! It helps drive traffic and gives people a place to find out more about you as well as build customer relationships and trust. There a tons of people selling stuff on the internet so it’s important to do your research.

How do you plan?
Every Sunday I print out stickers and come up with a theme. Sometimes just a color theme is enough. I like to start with the borders of my planner and work my way into the middle of the page. I try to make each week different.
